What kind of invisibility does the Staff of the Magi grant? I ask because it doesn't seem to work (or only partially work) on some of the creatures I've encountered recently in the Planar Sphere with my Solo Sorc.
Works Partially: The Efreeti in the Planar Sphere HOT room seemed to run right up to me when I entered the room but didn't start attacking me. Doesn't Work: The Demons outside of the Sphere completely ignored the invisibility! The Mephits in the area couldn't see me but the Demons would attack me immediately and ignore everything else to come after me. Their damn holding ranged attack got very annoying as well until I started using Spell Immunity Enchantment (but he still held me sometimes). Add to that his magic resistace and there was no way I could stop him. Is this a bug? Why could the Demon "see" me with the Staff of the Magi Equipped? I Must have died 20 times until I tried playing keep away with him while 5 Lesser Fire Elementals (Staff of Fire +2) attacked him. By the time I finally got 2-3 Lower Resists cast on him he was badly injured and the Fire Elementals finished him off soon after. Would I have been stuck if I didn't have those Lesser Fire Elementals? What else could I have tried on him? I'm still relatively new and this is my first attempt at Solo. I was a lvl 14 Sorceror with the Staff of Magi & Robe of Vecna, Ring of Protection +1, Ring of Ram, Wands of Cloudkill (11 charges), fire (1), lightning (6) & Monster summoning (1), some scrolls, and spells mostly in accordance to Dundee's Solo Sorc list for that level. I was in chapter 3 but hadn't yet gone to see Linvail & get the Amulet of Power (oops, didn't know you could get it right away). |
Um...I think all demons (Ta'naari and Baatezu) can see invisible. ;)

With many creatures that have magical resistance, invisibility does not work. They get a save versus their resistance percentage. They fail to see the dimensional phasing or whatever it is that the spell provides. High level creatures and those with exceptional intelligence are also given a resistance to it.
Invisibility at low levels is pretty useful, but later in the game I wouldn't waste a spell slot, or a ring finger on it. |

For PnP. ;) In BG2, however, things (unfortunately) don't work like that. It has nothing to do with saves, magic resistance or Intelligence. Some creatures, like Demons, Liches, Dragons, ToB High Level Summons, Improved Beholder and Improved Mind Flayers have a special ability called IDBS (Invisibility Detection By Script), which allows them to see through Invisibility. |
