I'm a statistic...I've been let go at work.

First, let me say how glad I am to have Ironworks back online and for Ziroc's enthusiasm to keep us running despite his own financial strains. It feels good to have a place to come unwind.

On February 26th, my company decided that I was not fitting into the new requirements to make sales attempts on every call, and despite my high marks on other factors of the job, it was determined that in today's economy that even a not-for-profit organization has to break its own rules to stay in business and since I was not willing to become that sales agent I was let go. I had been looking for other work prior to this day, as some of you already know. Nothing come from it and now here I am, waiting for unemployment to decide if they are going to help me while I continue to look for work.

Do any of you know how to structure résumés well? If so...or if you know where I can find work, I am willing to relocate. :)

This is my Skills version of my résumé, as opposed to the Experience version...as I am looking to get any job that would appreciate what I bring, not the history of what I've done. My main goal is to obtain a career in computers, possibly even going as far as Cyber Security or Computer Forensics, which I am studying this semester and will be my next certificate earned. However, I would LOVE it if any of you knew how to get into the chocolate career at the level of the US dealing with the manufacturers in Mexico and Central America where they would need a bilingual computer-saavy person to help in the process of bringing cocoa to the US for distribution. I would like to be involved at that level.

Your county unemployment office should have resources to help with resume's. Also Word has resume templates that are useful.

If you know technical Spanish then you need to market where bilingualism would be most helpful. So think about Texas and Florida. Being a Florida resident I can tell you that of the two, Florida's winter is MUCH more pleasant than Texas'. By that I mean you can throw away the snow shovel.

If you decide on Florida, then you can look me up in Titusville.

Re: I'm a statistic...I've been let go at work.

Hey

In my CV I combine thew experience and skills. For each job I put a short blurb about the job, then list in bullet points my 'key responsibilities and achievements', when i went looking for work last time, that seemed to be the stock phrase, so for example

The Very Big Corporation of America
Feb 1766 - present

I worked at TVBCA for several years as an executive assistant. This role entailed preparing paper aeroplanes for the executives, harassing secretaries (for which I was awarded with several restraint orders), compling lists of the best internet jokes and general tomfoolery as required by my supervisors. My key responsibilities and achievements included:

- Won the 'Most pathetic haircut' award at the 1879 annual awards
- Developed several new ways to goof off while appearing busy
- Attended numerous training courses on knitting (these were taught by an absolute hottie, so my actual knitting knowledge may be lacking)
- Helped redesign the officing filing system. I was given this opportunity after accidentally knocking over all the filing cabinets in a drunken stupor one Tuesday morning

Etc

Funnily enough, my firm is also having cutbacks at the moment. I am in the strange position of having been assured I am safe, but knowing that my wife and I plan to move to Europe in about 3 months. I have jsut met with the boss to explain this and suggest they fire me, however he says they wont. It is a little surreal.

Cap. Obvious - were are you moving in Europe?

Larry: Geez man that really sux - you mention relocating - ever thought of Europe? computer wizzes like you are highly sought after in Denmark so if you can live with a tax of 41% and that cars are the most expensive in the world.

ex. A brand new Toyota Prius will go for 230.000 DKR --- 43.000 dollars

I actually received an invite to be considered as a teacher of English (ESL) in either South Korea, China or Taiwan. If it were Japan, I might be more excited but I'd do it if it came down to it. My wife is not too keen on it. It would be for 1 year. They can come, but she don't want to move there. I'd do it now if I were single, though as I said Japan would be so much more appealing.

I guess I should do some research on Denmark and see if I can get Karen to agree to it. I would go wherever I could find a good fit for me, though I am not looking to hard in places that I could not imagine living...like Texas or Arizona.

Thanks for the suggestion Sparhawk!

Seriously? Like, personally I'd rather see the cutting edge of where the world is happening (SK or China) than the much-too-neoned place where people are crammed in like a beehive and the morals or so ridiculous that they sell dirty little girl underwear in vending machines.

Sorry to hear about you losing your job Larry.

Advice - Try a complete career change maybe?

Better Advice - ask all your friends and acquaintances for any jobs going, you have a better chance with someone personally recommending you rather than just throwing your hat in the ring with all the other unknowns.

wishing you all the best mate

Larry,

Go to http://www.cpol.army.mil/ and do job search for Kentucky. You will find numerous mid-grade IT positions available.

BRAC 05 has the armor school departing and the Human Resources Command AND the Accession Command arriving on Ft. Knox. Construction is about complete with June being the ribbon cutting.

If not, poke around on ACPOL or http://www.usajobs.gov/ and see where Uncle Sugar needs your skills.

The Resume on ACPOL is called Resumix, you only have 12000 characters to express yourself, that's about two pages.

Good luck.

Sparhawk, we are heading to Edinburgh eventually, after a few months travelling in Europe.

I told my bosses I was leaving, and they asked for as much notice as possible, so I gave them 8 weeks (cant leave till that time) and they have shafted me and want me gone in 2 weeks - so now I really need to find 6 weeks work in Perth before we leave.

Highly annoying, but I am fairly glad to be done with this place!

Re: I'm a statistic...I've been let go at work.

yeah that sound really bad - In Denmark its not even possible- i.e. I have 4 months resignation period at my current company and that number rises with one month each yeah I work there until I hit 6 months - after that I get som extra pension and stuff.

I don't understand how work ethics in other countries can give people that small period - it must make it a lot more stressfull to work in troubled times. I mean - in the summer some of the people was laid off from my company due to the crisis and they all got their law-determined period and after that the company gave them 2 months extra due to the way they got fired.
