Champions Online

Anyone playing it? I started playing in beta and go the retail yesterday at launch.

I love it. There's tons of quests to do, close to a hundred per zone. My quest log is always full.

Plus you have items and crafting in this one. There is a lot more to do than in City of Heroes and the combat is more fast paced. You also get your travel power really early.

Any trial as of yet? Will play it if so. May even subscribe if I take to it.

Go retrive this [item] from this [place] for me and I'll reward you.
Go kill this [individual] for me and I'll reward you.
Go kill [number] [animal/monster/undead/people] and I'll reward you.
Go rescue [people name] and I'll reward you.
Deliver this [item] to [name of individual] and I'll reward you.

Re: Champions Online

Have to agree, MMO's need a revamp. Questing is just plain shite, lol. Even with mods like Questhelper I can't bring myself to pick up 10 of X item or kill 6 of Y monster anymore. I don't even quest anymore in WoW, just instance and worse case, aoe grind if I really need XP.

Nothing to do with Champions Online specifically of course - just some general venting. As you know I am on the fence with this one and don't wanna buy it for fear that I will never play it. As you also know I did have access to the beta, but by the time I went back for a second look after you had said good thing about it, well, it had already closed for live release : -/.

Let me know if a trial comes available - if anything it will be a welcome diversion. I did love City of heroes, it's just it had pratcially ZERO content to sustain that love and I began to resent paying for practically nothing. Great engine though and fun combat with Z-axis etc.

Re: Champions Online

Sure that's the core of pretty much every rpgs. But Champions Online is giving it a different twist.

The game is really fast paced. You can kill pretty big groups of enemies by yourself and you never have to sit down and rest. So long as you don't go after a group bigger than you can chew you're pretty much able to kill non-stop.

And this time around you can mix and match your powers. You could have a character who fight melee with a Katana, has a fireshield, and carries around a Rocket Launcher for backup. Or maybe you want a Power armored Psychic character, a gangster who summons zombies etc.

I'm not kidding about the number of quests in this one. There is actually an achievement in each zone that are along the line of "Complete 70 quests in Zone X". Sometimes as I'm super speeding my way to a quest area I run into 2-3 more quests and then on my way to those quests I run into yet more etc.

And as if that wasn't enough, enemies often drop items that starts quests so even when you're just out killing stuff you can get quests.

Nice, nice. Sounds like they learned quite a bit from WoW and implemented what worked. Also sounds like they finally realized downtime is NOT fun ever (even WoW are slow to initialize this in every aspect of their game).

My burning question is, did they finally do away with experience debt? Because that was so 10 years ago. Hopefully Crypric woke up to the idea that penalizing players up the ass for death is not something worth paying for. In a way, it sounds alot like CoH/CoV rebooted but with much of the bad stuff taken out.

Re: Champions Online

There is no penalty for dying but there is a slight bonus for staying alive. Depending on how long you've been alive you can get from 2% to 6% xp and regen bonus which in my opinion it's so negligible is not worth worrying about.

No, it's not but it's nice that there's a positive to surviving as opposed to a negative for not. That's the way to do it I think, reward players for good work rather than punish them for bad.

I'm getting a little craving to play it now, all the old memories of when I first played and enjoyed CoH coming back hehe.
