So, as we made clear that these two possibly will not work togeather, I am planning to start over BG2/ToB playing a ranger. Which of the expansions would you suggest?

As I like to say: I don't like TDD. Too few good stuff, too much bad. And some quests are... unlogical.
I have never played SoS. Try that. On the other hand, it doesn't matter - try both (one at the time) and post your opinion.
