I am probably missing the obvious, but how do you solve the puzzle?
I get the order...ring, blood, hand then staff, but I cannot seem
to make it work. What's the trick?

Thanks

First, you need all the items, They can all be found in the same area as the pipes.

Second, you need to find the room with the four pipes. It sounds like you did this.

Third, you need to move close to a pipe, click on it, and get a clue as to what goes in the pipe. The next time you click on a pipe, you'll try to put the item in the pipe. So the trick is to figure out what goes in what pipe, then use the pipes in the proper order.

I am still having problems with this part, and I have tried
everything I can think of. All four items are with me, and
I have tried all the pipes in different orders. Is this
crucial to the game, or can I pass it up for now?

Well, you get a pretty good 2-handed sword from it,

What does it say when you try to use the pipes?

It isn`t crucial, no.
Numbering the pipes 1-4 from right to left, use them in this order:
3, 1, 2, 4
Make sure you get the red ball come up out of each one before you go to the next one, and you should get a two-handed sword in your inventory

It is a little bit annoying, that every time, you make a mistake, you have to start the sequence again. It took me quite a time to find this out ;)
