First of all, I didn't know if I had to post this here or to AD&D & Other Fantasy RPG Novels.
I am thinking of enter the Dungeons and Dragons world! What I am saying is that I will buy the startest set of Dungeons and Dragons and I want your opinion. Should I buy it or not?

Definitely. I like the new Dungeons and Dragons a lot. If you really want to get into it you're better off with the players hand book though. More detail.

Skip the starter set.. Only a way to spend money and want you to spend more on the real produkt!

My advice is that you buy the Players handbook, the Dungeon Masters guide and read the rules and get familiarized with it. Download a free adventure ad www.wizards.com and ask any questions here if you need any help getting started. When you are about to start for real, get the monster manual. You are going to need more than the few examples from the Players handbook samples..

Once started you can spend as much money you want on this, but thoose three books are the essential ones, with thoose you can play along time, and might never need any other books.

The forgotten Realms settings books and the special books for wizards fighters etc are also nice, but they are not needed. The only extra they really give is some prestige classes that few are going to choose anyway, a cuople of good feats, ( I can mail ém to you! ;) ) and the most important is the ideas on how to develope and hints and tips and maps organisations and so on.. You can get that by reading alot of books instead! ;) (if you want to save money that is, if you can spend money on it, they can come in quite handy, but are not essential..)

Be wary with the D20 system books. They are made for D&D books, but might be of no use since there is alot of spells/feats that might be redone to suit your style of play, some on the other hand are excellent!

The best material are probably the different books from Forgotten Realms. Alot of info both fun to read and useful if you want to play Forgotten Realms style. Good also if you read the D&D books as well since alot of characters and countries are presented here!

Thanks WOLFGIR! The only problem is that I have to do an order from a shop in Athens (Greece's capitol) because there's nothing here about D&D.
Could you tell me what I must basically order?

You need the Players Handbook (PHB), if there are other people around that game and one of them has experience being Dungeon Master (DM/GM... Game Master, as it's called in many other RPG genre's) you don't need the Dungeon Master Guide, and it's actually recommended that you don't read it, it's secrets are for Dungeon Masters only, same goes for the Monster Manuals. you also need Dice, but this is a given, you need at least one complete set [1 4 sided die "d4", one 6 sided die "d6", a "d8" 2 d10's, a d12, and a d20, there are others you can get (d30 and d100) but these are rare and usually reserved for powergamers and the hopelessly addicted such as myself...]
you can never have too many dice, i have around 12 sets here and another 10 at home i've been trying to get back.
it can be useful to get the books to help you out with setting up a character, especially for someone new to the game (i've been playing for close to 7 years and spent easily over $5,000 on books, supplements and stuff that looked interesting to me.
hope this helps

Actually Players handbook is all you need
that and find some good character sheets online
Someone to play Dunguon Master is very important
What is required too is a good imagination
and a good sence of humor (we dragged a paralysed person over rails head down )
It's a great game

Morgeruat 11-07-2001 12:19 PM

true but SOMEONE needs a set of dice, or at least a random # generator on a puter

Grand-Ranger 11-07-2001 12:23 PM

Good choice Byronas. Itsa good game to start p,laying, you need atleast 3 or more otehr people to start playing though, and when I started there wasnt anyone to play with :( it got frustrating.

But if you can find somone, its great. Everyone else has already Told you waht books to buy. PHB (players handbook) and if you choice to become the DM (Dungeon Master) then The DMG (Dungeon Master Guide) and Monster Manual.

There is alot of experinced players around here, Me, Wolfgir, Rikard Plays I think. There is alot of rules in the game, but dont let that stop you having playing the greatest RPG in the world!!

Have fun.

You will need at LEAST one other person to play the game. Dice are a must, unless you have a random generator on your computer.

3rd Edition Players Handbook is all you need, unless you plan on becoming a DM. In which case you should buy a Dungeon Masters Guide and the Monter Manual. The Character Sheets sold in stores are nice but not a necessity.

These books are 20 to 35 US dollars each.

I play 3E to to call me an expert goes a bit far since i played it only 2 times
It's really interesting and it's very humouristic (at least it is in our group we have a crazy Sorcerer who casts light on his own hair, his name is rikard )
