it's relic's "Essence Engine," used in creating this year's (my pick for the best game of 2006)Company of Heroes

...well, mostly for BG (D&D) and fallout series type. when computer technology pointed to a 3D future some years ago, CRPG developers went the adventure (NWN, KotOR) and FPS (Gothic and Elder Scrolls)route. FPS suits well for Oblivion type of game (which I don't care for), but imo, RTS will fit D&D style or party-oriented CRPG much better than the adventure type game engine. so far, KotOR has done a better job than NWN. The camera control in NWN2 is simply disturbbing.

Essence Engine has the default isometric view on 3D enviroment. players can zoom in and out, rotate and such, getting into 3D gaming mode, yet with a backspace hit, all goes back to the default view again. Imagine, the classic BG/PT/Fallout view done in incredibly detailed 3D models, both characters and landscapes and we can zoom in at will.
KotOR has less disorientation issue than NWN2, but the battle and map scale is downsized quite a lot, compared to BG2. Essence Engine offers the best of two worlds -- classic isometric, grand scale view and amazing, detailed 3D graphics.

I think the future of CRPG, or the revigorating of BG type of classic CRPG is in Essence Engine type of game engine.
