What exactly is the difference between a dam (the hoover kind and whatnot), and a dyke (dutch ocean thingies). Aren't they technically one and the same since they both hold back ocean's(and streams) for use by humans? Any clarification on the two would be much appreciated. BTW... what did you think I was going with in this thread? [img]smile.gif[/img]

ummm...errr...I think the main difference is the country they are built in...

I would think the main difference is that you dam a river to HOLD a body of fresh water that is enclosed in valleys and hills. A dyke is built to EXCLUDE water (usually the sea) to keep an area of land dry.
