[NWN] multiple attacks and combat order

How does NWN resolve combat order when 2 users have more than 1 ApR

Lets say A has 4 ApR and B has 2 ApR.
A wins initiative.

If I'm not mistaken, according to 3E rules, A should make 4 attacks, then B 2 attacks, then A 4 attacks and so on.

Is this how it works with NWN?

Re: [NWN] multiple attacks and combat order

Combat is broken up into three attack moments. If you have one apr, you attack in the first moment of the round, then miss two. If you have two apr, you attack in the first and second moment and miss the third. With three apr, you cover all attack moments. With four, you attack twice in the first moment, and once in the other two. And so on.
Your main hand attacks are always resolved first, your off-hand attacks second. So suppose you were fighting with a longsword and shortsword, had 4 attacks per round and another 2 from improved two weapon fighting, and were hasted for an extra attack per round, you'd strike three times with your main hand, then twice with main hand and then twice with off-hand.

The initiative roll determines at what exact point of the round your fight moments occur, so you might strike almost simultaneously or take turns depending on the occasion.
Usually, in the example above, A strikes twice, then B once, then A once, then B once, then A once, B has no attacks left, and then it starts all over again.

thanks.

could you elaborate a bit more on the initiative?

Also how is spellcasting implemented into this 3 attack moments system? does casting a spell always take place in the first moment and last one moment only?

Re: [NWN] multiple attacks and combat order

As far as I know, you attack at 0, 2 and 4 seconds into the round plus a little delay based on the initiative order (not related to the actual value of the roll, only to how many of your opponents you've beaten in the area you're in. Or somesuch. I'm not convinced this is true). Although if you and your opponent are a distance apart it gets a bit dodgy as sometimes you get an AOO, sometimes the other one does, or they get to strike first once anyway all depending on when you two get within melee range - the rounds 'start' when you're still apart and you first click the enemy.

Spell casting starts at the first moment and takes a certain while to complete, usually a second and a half, after which you're more or less immobile for another second and a half (see spells.2da). So your spell goes off after the first but before the second attack - usually. Not counting an AOO which takes place when you begin your casting.
Haste and Quicken Spell can speed up the casting time, perhaps allowing you to cast a second spell after the first one before the round's ended.

Although since attack and damage are separate, and there's a delay between the casting of a spell and its own effect, it's entirely possible that between getting a hit/spell in and killing your opponent they can still get their hit in before, and deliver damage after they've died.

I find that unless you're involved in a pvp situation where getting your spell or blow off first makes all the difference, initiative isn't really worth thinking about.

Great! Thanks Legolas for the explanation.
