I need help

I have activated the big pillar that takes you to a waterfilled room (couldnt find anything).
I then left the room and when i came back the pillar had lost its elevating ability.
I have tried everything and i read all the messages in this forum and someone said to use the vanish spell at the nearby surface, I have tried that in the room and outside and it doesn't work.
Where is the nearby surface where you can vanish into the waterfilled room??

There is also a lever stuck in a room nearby (the lever closed a small doorway I couldn't get through)
I read that there is a keyhole somewhere in that area which is triggered by some key i don't have
Tell me.
