Detect Evil is one of the best spells IMO. You can get info about how many enemies there are on the map and what has Magic Resistance.

of course, id rather not waste a spell slot on it... i think ill just have a paladin using it, thank you very much!

Of course you can't compare any game out of the Final Fantasy Series to it. They are the untouchables. Story/Graphics are way too good. Just like you can't compare Hootie and the Blowfish to Nirvana.
