Kaz - don't you have a German keyboard then? Must be difficult when living there...
ä = alt + 132 ö = alt + 148 ü = alt + 129 ß = alt + 225 Oh, and I'm from Amsterdam, the Netherlands btw. Ancient thread indeed, Dreamer - I still remember when you posted it and that was a while ago. BTW Yorick - I fervently disagree with your point in that ancient discussion that we should all call every place in the world by the name its inhabitants call it. No, I don't like it when Köln is called Cologne, Milano Mailand or whatever, but your proposition is simply unrealistic. First of all, there is no way in the world in which one could learn all those names by head, nor a way in which one could use them. If all your countrymen know Köln as Cologne, how do you expect them to know what you're talking about when you use the former name? Second, I'd much rather have people use an anglicised or whatever version of my country/city's name that a horrible multilated and mispronounced version of the name I call it myself. Face it: you'll never get the accent right of all those language, so for clarity's sake alone you'd be better understood if you used a more international version of the name (and since English is such a global language, it would certainly count as more international). I thought it was really sweet and considerate that when you were in Holland, you asked people "Spreek je Engels?" before addressing them in English, but 1. it isn't really necessary - I cannot imagine a single Dutchie being insulted if you'd address them in English (they actually take pride in the fact that they'd most likely understand you http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif) and secondly...uh, it wasn't exactly very clear what you were asking - most people just went "Huh? Wha'?" http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif That's no wonder of course, you don't need to expect yourself to be able to ask that question fluently in any language. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif Whew - long post - silly me, that conversation was sooo old but I couldn't resist replying. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif ------------------ Melusine, Sultry Elflet, High Queen of Fluffies, Archbabe of the OHF, LH, HADB and ORT! http://www.angelfire.com/anime2/memnoch/mel1.gif Your voice is ambrosia Amy Brown Fantasy Art [This message has been edited by Melusine (edited 10-27-2001).] |
