If your considering playing the game only once: easily Torment.

Was a demo of torment ever released?

Where there are monsters and barbarians there will be Byronas fighting against them.

Fallout, by far. It has a unique setting and you'll at least get a gun in your hands as opposed to a sword.

I'd say, Daggerfall and Fallout2. Daggerfall has such a brillaint features as Spell-, Item- and PotionMakers, Guilds with their ranks, and, of course, skills system - I think it is wise that the character gain better skill levels through frequent using of the skill. On the other hand, Fallout has one of the best combat systems. Plus, these games have no those nasty classes (though Daggerfall actually has classes, you can create your very own class simply choosing appropriate skills, and, if you please, advantages and diadvantages, thus creating whatever PC you want).

And BG2 has magnificent story, the best NPC's and...well, you know about all the pluses of BG-SoAhttp://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif... it is just irresistable in involving into the gameworld.

Seriously, guys...

Daggerfall, while very ambitious, is one of the most bugged games ever released and has truly awful dungeon design. It very quickly earned the nickname "Buggerfall" on Usenet. The thing that killed the magic for me was when I spotted a funny looking "hole" in the floor of a dungeon. When I approached it, I literally fell out from the map and was caught in endless freefall. I could see the map from the outside as I fell by it, again and again...

The whole Elder Scrolls series is basically an excellent character design system waiting for a good game.

All IMO.

Torment, Fallout 2 and possibly the Final Fnatsy series.

I think that both BG1 and Torment are great. The first is more hack and slash than the other but the second is more dialogue-based.

Daggerfall, even though it was buggy, most bug problems could be avoided by installing the patches and saving often.

Fallout 2, what can I say, is ANYTHING more cool than ripping your enemies to shreds with a laser-minigun?

Planescape: Torment, wonderful story, cool and unusual NPCs, just generally cool, could have used a multi-player mode and a slightly larger world though.
