I've just started playing this game and I keep running into locked doors that can't be opened just by picking locks or forcing them. I don't have any spells to open these doors either. I've looked at walkthroughs, but they make no mention of how to get through them. So I'm stuck in the first section of the game. What do I have to do to get these doors open?

I know, I know, I'm a dumbass =) I used to play ad&d around the table with friends for years and years, but haven't played anything ad&d pc wise since pools of radience years back, so please, any help or advice will be greatly appreciated and thanks =)

Welcome!!!

Well, it depends. You should have a thief, and with you in the beginning, it means this: there are doors that cannot be picked unless you have a key of some sort. They are usually quest related. So if it says it cannot be opened by any magical or physical means it means you have to find a key or something...

The rest should be easy for Imoen.

Sorry, do you have thief? Do you have Jan in your party? He is able to open most of locked objects.
However some doors/chests can not be opened without some special key/quest trigger - but there are not so many of them -usually there is a message like - this lock is protected from mechanical picking and lower level spells.

The previous replies are correct.

At the beginning of the game, you find yourself in an area where many doors do not open, and the locks cannot be picked. Have you spoken to everyone you can speak to? Are there any creatures in the rooms that you can get into? Have any of them said anything interesting? Perhaps one of the creatures you come across can open those doors for you?

Trying not to be too blatent here, just giving some hints, as it can be frustrating to be stuck so early on in the game. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif Good luck!

Well, firstly, thankyou everyone who responded and for the welcomes =)

Wandering around some more I've found an entrance I previously missed, so hopefully something will turn up down this area....it's just outside of the room that has all the tanks with dead creatures in them. This is the msg I get with the locked doors: 'the mechanism that operates this does not have a conventional lock, and may be warded against simple spells'. How do you get through those?

I really dig this game, but the most recent rpg games I'd played were Diablo 1 & 2 and Vampyre The Masquerade, and so the perspective of looking down on the characters from such a distance takes some getting used to.

Sorry, forgot to say I do have Imoen, and also Minsc and Jaheira. No one else yet though =)

Bahamut 10-02-2001 03:47 AM

Well see? Imoen can help a lot, but sometimes not even the best thief on the planet can pick something that cannot really be picked...

When you get used to it, it'll be fun I assure you.. and you will love the NPC interactions! Hope ya enjoy now! http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

That message means that no amount of lock picking will get the door open. You need a specific item (usually a key, like a house key, but not always. Keys in the game can come in other forms e.g. statuettes, heads, ward stones, etc).

Don't know about bashing tho'.

i would say spoiler but at this point you probably want it http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

on those unpickable doors, once you have the "key" you don't need to pick the lock or use the item; if you have the key the door will open normally. example: just east of the duergar room and north of the cambion is the door to the air elemental plane (airplane http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...les/tongue.gif). this door is unpickable. its "key" is a statuette found in irenicus' bedroom (east of the otyugh room, north of the 3 dryads). when you have the statuette and open the door, the statuette will disappear. some keys will do that.

good luck.
