Sphinx didnt leave me anyin to open the shrine behind it

I wish this game had more focus

Do Skull Castle. You need the Lich's staff to get into the sphynx temple!

I sort of wandered here for a while also. I was unsure to go until I started talking to the townsfolk. The quests will direct you on where to go and what to look for. I also got quite confused about Talrik looking for Longtooths in Skull Castle. I thought for sure he actually meant skull castle and the vampires. Longtooths being some form of his weird slang. I looked and looked for a vamp to drop a hide in Skull Castle. I finally gave up only to find actual Mobs in Isis' temple called Longtooths. I figured it was just a bug in Talriks text.
