As my other thread points out, I am definitely a "child of the 80's" (was actually a young adult just outta high school, but close enough).

I was working for my dad and one of my weekly chores was to mow a LOT of grass around the area where his office was. There was one song in particular I used to sing to myself while mowing the grass. I can remember many of the lyrics, but I can't think of the title of the song (or the artist) to save my life. So I need the help of all the other "80's Children" out there.

Here are the lyrics I remember singing....

3,6,9, the goose drank wine, the monkey chewed tobacco on the street car line.
The line broke, the monkey got choked, and they all went to heaven in a little rowboat.
Clap, Clap, your hands...clap your hands.

Take the palms of your hands, and slap your thighs, and watch the fun materialize as we sing this little song...

My momma told me, if I was goody,
That she would buy me, a rubber dolly.
My auntie told her, I kissed a soldier.
Now she won't buy me, a rubber dolly."

Seems like I heard this song at the skating rink more than on the radio. I'm also thinking it is a female group (maybe the Pointer Sisters when they were starting to make their comeback). But that's as far as my memory will go.

Hmm, all my searching for that song just said it was the Clap sonbg by Aaron Carter. Isn't that the little kid who does rap? I dont think he did that song in the 80's, anyways...

"Two six five
The goose drank wine
The monkey chewed tobacco by the danger sign
The line it broke, the monkey choked
And they all went to heaven in a little row boat"

Sounds like it is from Kahimi Karie - Good Morning World

But I cant remember the clap your hands or dolly bit being in there.

EDIT: Bummer, a bit more digging found that "the song quotes 'The Clapping Song' " But it doesnt give the original artist.

EDIT 2: Bingo I think I have it - Belle Stars - The Clapping Song

Those are not really the words to that particular song, but they should be.

THAT'S IT!!!! THANKS SHADOWHOUND!!

It seems I didn't know the lyrics as well as I thought I did (LOL). No big surprise there. I also had no idea that this was a cover of a song from the 60's. I thought it was just one of the many One-Hit Wonders from my favorite decade of music.

Like I said, I never heard the song on the radio that much, so I've never even had a clue what the title to the song was. Now - after all these years - I can actually check out the real lyrics to the song.

Glad to have helped Cerek, it was quite a challenge to find and I love the occasional challenge :D

Enjoy.

The original hit called "The Clapping Song" by Shirley Ellis was in 1965.
