You see, the common picture of a gamer in my state is fat, stinking idiot wich holds the mouse in one, and biiiig bowl of ice cream in other hand.
He likes Shakira, Britney, adores boy bands, often masturbates on his Ricky Martin poster, and plays some idiotic game all day...

Sometimes this strange picture is really true, but mostly it's prejudice...
What gamers are?
Intelligent people enjoying spending their time on computer?
Not allways.
Cool guys which can pick up all girls with their knowledge obout games?
Rarely.
Skinny idiots with REALLY big dioptry?
Sadly, but sometimes.

So What do You think?

johnny 04-21-2003 09:50 AM

Is that really what they think where you live ? Have you thought about moving away ? :D
I DO hold the mouse in one hand, but in the other is defenitely not a bowl of icecream. And all that music you mentioned is not for me either. I'm not fat either. You got some weird thoughts overthere in Croatia. :D

LOL, how about a 53-year old surgeon married to a beautiful woman but who keeps pictures of Imoen, Viconia, and Fall-From-Grace on his hard drive?

quietman1920 04-21-2003 10:26 AM

You can't keep pictures of Imoen buried on your hard drive. Her head will hurt and then she'll suddenly "have to get to the surface"...

As for me, its a way to spend time when the wife & kids Insist on watching Musicals (Aacccch! Gaggg!)or the odd Disney Channel movie. And it gives my wife & oldest son more time to figure out Zelda on the Gamecube.

Attalus 04-21-2003 10:30 AM

Oh, yes, they surface all of the time. Have to, since I Romance her all of the time, now. oh, and Annah, can't leave her out. She is on my desktop. http://img.ranchoweb.com/images/lordbel/annahanim.gif

never met a gamer like that. in fact, i've never in my life met a fat gamer. most gamers i've met are guys who have matabolism like shaggy from scoody doo. i'm a gamer and i'm underweight (slightly). also, the last person to say they liked boy bands (like blue and *egh* westlife) near my friends ran for there life in terror. they is not well liked by most i know. also i wash at least once a day.

and yes, the games i play all day are in fact idiotic. well, some of them.

The japanese have a word just for the subject:

Otaku

Ok, you look up "otaku" in a Japanese dictionary, it means "house". Hmmm, that's not how Americans use it, is it? Of course the formal meaning is related to the meaning that is used today. (In America, "otaku" seems to have been redefined as "fan" or at worst "fanboy".)

Basically the slang use of otaku is a person who is completely obsessed on one thing. So much so that this obsession interferes with the person's ability to function in a "normal" life. That said, it's easy to see how a "home person" can be derived from the word "house". (It's especially easy to show that an anime fan is a "house person", because most anime fans that I know are people who dabble in video games {especially rpgs}, computers, sci-fi, and anime). But anime is not the only thing that people obsess over. Example: Kensuke from Eva is a war/weapons/tech otaku.

Anyway, you don't want to be called an otaku and my impression is that most Japanese people would not be either. I doubt many people would fit the Japanese definition of a "true otaku", because those people have to be really out of it. For instance, I recall one of Megumi Hayashibara's character's describing a "typical otaku" as "smelly, obsessive, fat, and ugly".

Ah, here's the disturbing part. The tale behind the coining of the term "otaku" in Japan. It's like the worst possible thing that can happen in the world, and to have it happen in Japan is rather unthinkable. Anyway, this heavily based on Police accounts of it, so if it's wrong (shrug). Here's the story:

There was a case where a serial killer sexually molested and raped little girls aged 6-12 years old. There were more than 10 children found chopped up, and the worst part was there were pieces missing.

Finally a 28 year old man was arrested. Interestingly enough, people described him as a quiet and timid man. Funny, isn't that what they always say? Shows what little people really know about each other.

When the police later searched the man's small apartment (it's Japan), they found it was unkept and filled with nothing but anime tapes. On three of the walls were "book shelves filled with anime videos from floor to ceiling, and there were piles of more tapes in the corner."

Of course this guy was so obsessive that there was nothing else (no furniture).

Anyway, the rest of the flesh of the victims was found in the refrigerator.

So know you must be asking, "What the hell does this have to do with anime and otakus?"

So anyway, because of the media's focus on the freakish anime aspect of the guy, of course otakus were thought of as complete monsters and freaks. According to Police bulletins, otakus were actually considered social outcasts even before the crime, but, of course, the image of otaku just became worse because of this incident.

Remember to not confuse "otaku" with the American definition "fan".

Ok, from what I gathered, an otaku is usually male (eh, makes sense). Usually an otaku is a person so out of synch in the world that he does not cleanse himself, is malnutritioned, obsessive, and shallow. Again, a normal fan or a borderline hardcore fan probably has a couple overlaps. What I usually do to test for "otakuness" is just ask the simple question, "Does this person have a life?"

Am I an Otaku? (or are you?)

I thought that this question would be fun to answer since I'm definitely a really hardcore anime fan. I mean I have an anime fan site, a bunch of anime merchandise, and friends who like anime, so am I out of synch with the world?

Yes I think I'm an Otaku. I do spend a majority of my money on anime, and games, and anime is one of my largest interests, and when I do talk to people, it is usually about games and anime, it's not the only thing in my life, however.

For one thing, with college crushing me, do I have time or energy to do anything except pop DVDs in and get my laughs before doing my homework.

I still digress that I am an Otaku though, this is because I actually DRAW manga for a past time, I wouldn't consider most people who are too quick to call themselves "otaku" otaku. This is simply due to the fact that they aren't dedicated to it to the extent that they have to import their games months in advance and can crush even the most experted players at any fighting game by just touching it. I fall under this category so I label myself without question as an Otaku, but I am a very busy one So before I go into ranting any more I'll just leave you to question yourselves...

Fanatic is closer meaning, I assume.

For Christ's sake, we did not need to hear that! Abominable!
I hope that... man(?) was chopped with blunt side of an axe...
