What's the proper sequence to get the door open?

On the above map, the treasury is at the top. Each of the white squares in the middle is one of the posts. Pull #1 is the "key" pull...do this one last. Pull the chains from 2 through 8, then go back around and pull #8 through #2 in reverse order for those who have gone back up. Check back to make sure they're all down. If any go back up, pull them again. When #2 through #8 are all in the down position (the gargoyle's eyes light up) then pull #1. The gate should open.

I am doing the following:
1. Start at 8 and go around skipping 1, i.e., 8-2-3-...-7-8-2-3-..., pulling the chains that are up and skipping the ones that are already down. Continue until chains 2 - 8 are down. This should happen during the 3rd or 4th round.
2. Pull 1 when all remaining chains are down.
Perhaps, it is possible to start with another chain, for example 2 (this would be the "Sazerac's method without back run").
