You're trying to steal from a thief.
Kill them all, I say. Easy way is to cast emotion, which sends them all to the floor. Even if a couple save, you can just go ahead and do it again, since it's not counted as an attack spell. Heh.

problem is i have no mage as imoens just been
taken by the cowled wizards so i can't use
emotion.

also weird how the official guide says i can
pick his pocket??

If you have them, you can use stuff like the potion of master theivery, gloves of pick pocketing, and potions that raise your dex. I'm not sure if taking your armor off helps or not, but you might try it.
