what is soloing?

Morgan_Corbesant 11-26-2001 08:21 PM

soloing is where you start a NEW game with a character. you dont use ANY cheats, and you go through the game with THAT character. you dont get any npc's, or anything of the sort. you try and beat the game with ONE character. quite easy with a sorceror i might add. or a paladin. or thief, lol.

Willard 11-26-2001 08:25 PM

thanks, but wouldn't that be very hard?( take liches or vampires, for instance)

thats kinda the point. some people do it for the challenge, some people cos they hate all the NPCs, and other cos their bored with the character interactions and have heard everything already/

anyway, most times one character who happens to specialise in a certain situation does most of the work anyway. nalia is my dragon slayer for instance. yes, really. the annoying do-gooder. the one with time stop, improved alacrity, lower resistance, pierce mage, magic missile, horrid wilitng, summon planetar, mordakainens sword. (read :- basic dragon slaying spellset )

so in soloing the challenge is adapting your character to the situation rather than moving the best one forward.

Dundee Slaytern 11-26-2001 11:38 PM

Vampires?

There is always the good old Protection from Undead scrolls.

Paladins eat Vampires for snacks thanks to Turn Undead.

Mages/Sorcerers can go invisible and destroy them with summons and spells.

Thieves backstab them to death.

Liches?

Protection from Undead scrolls again, Aduzedge, Mace of Disruption +1(2), etc... ...

This might sound stupid, but how do you get rid of those early characters. I told jaheria and minsc off, but Imoen sticks around. How do you drop her so that you are truly "solo"?

Either attack her and get her down to 1 hp and she will leave or choose reform party and drop her. She will protest but will leave.

Lord Ludtke 11-28-2001 02:28 PM

Is it ethical to attack my sister :D . Thnx I will try that.

PS. During a solo am I supposed to use a guy that made it through already and cheat to get the boots of speed and bag of holding, cause I started it with a new character and I am getting my ass whupped.

Lucre 11-28-2001 02:31 PM

You could try soloing on an easier game setting if its to hard so you can get used to it.

Sir Degrader 11-28-2001 02:38 PM

Um isn't that a spoiler?

What is a spioler?

andrewas 11-28-2001 06:59 PM

lucre, your sig seem to be .. growing. as in most of my screen.

anyway, back to the point.

most people i think hack themselves a bag of holding, its gonna be very hard to get enough money without it. boots of speed, well i woudnt myself. you can get them pretty quick anyway.

what class are you soloing anyway, that always helps when answering these questions.

Ummmm....no, no, no, no and that's the whole challenge of soloing. :D

you mean take someone through the game an import them to get improved level!

NO. NO. NO.

dont do it.

start a new character. if youve been through the game already you will have found instances where you had to use clever tactics to succede, right? (if not, i pity you. you musta missed a lot). times when wandering in, swords swinging, just gets you chunked. times like kangaxx for instance.

well, in a solo you have to do that all the time. you have to build a character that can handle anything the game throws at you, from an army of kobolds to a flight of dragons. (ok, i exagerate. there are only ever 7 dragons on-screen at once. and even thats a baldurdash improvement). you have to be constantly inventive, learn the limits of your character and how to counter them. if you can solo any class through on insane, you will be a better player, and it will show when you play with a party again. and i look forward to fighting alongside allies such as this when it comes to NWN.

Dundee Slaytern 11-28-2001 11:46 PM

When you solo, you really solo. Start from scratch, no such thing as giving yourself items. Well, at least that is the way I play solo, other people's mileage might vary. To me however, 'assisting' yourself defeats the purpose of soloing, which is to challenge yourself. Cheese is allowed, but not blatant cheating.

Fuzzy Animal 11-28-2001 11:59 PM

I recommend a mage or sorcerer type to try to solo with first. I tried to go back to playing a party but got extremely bored, so now I'm back to soloing. You might have a little trouble at first but when you reach level 15 or so watch out!!! You become a death machine!! The battles become extremly easy. I guess its time to bump it up to INSANE. You don't need to cheat to have fun. Good luck!!

Dundee Slaytern 11-29-2001 12:02 AM

Ironically, I have become stuck with soloing and the Insane Difficulty. When I try to play with a party, voices start chanting in my head, "Too easy, too easy, you cheap pansy."

Gah!

Morgan_Corbesant 11-29-2001 01:29 AM

i cant help it, but i HAVE to hack boots of speed in. i HATE my characters moving slow. i get bored having to wait forever for them to move to the other side of the map. that is the only thing that i give to my character to start him off with.

Dundee Slaytern 11-29-2001 01:40 AM

If I had hacked in the Boots of Speed for either my solo Archer or my solo Assassin, the game would have become too easy. I prefer to just assault the Planar Prison instead.

Ok, I tried to do it legit and the first thing I noticed is...you can't kill EVERYTHING in the game. I had to choose my battles and avoid unnecessary ones. Secondly, my assassin was doing a lot of backstabbing and then running like hell to HiS, or drawing creatures back to some previously laid traps. Thirdly, I was resting a lot to regain some abilities. This was weird after finishing the game hearing"I need rest if our cause is to succeed" about 80% of the time, second only to "you must gather your party.." for annoyance.

So my question to the soloists is this: Honestly how much of 40 hours of game time is spent running away, resting, or reloading your game? I would rather the game just made the battles proportionally more difficult depending on how many was in the group, then all this running around. I don't recall many incidents on pen and paper where I told the DM I was going whack the creature and then run. Repeat ad nauseum....

Dundee Slaytern 11-29-2001 09:31 AM

Dude, nobody made a plaque and announced that soloing was the easiest thing to do in the BG2 world. If soloing was easy, everybody and their grandma, grandpa and cousins would have done it already.

As I have said before, I soloed for the challenge. If I wanted an easy life in the game, I would have made a party already.

Anyway, I went to check my solo Assassin and here is a titbit, it has been 170+ gamedays already and I am still in Chapter 3( level 28 now). Assassins are harder to solo than other kits because their forte is stealthy kills, not brazen gung-ho senseless charging into the fray. I have killed Kangaxx, whupped Bodhi, cleared Nalia's Keep and Tradesmeet, among several others. Soon to be on the hit list are the Shadow Dragon, Firkragg, Twisted Rune and the Guarded Compound.

If you really need to know, the easiest kit to solo with is the Kensai->Mage, followed by the Sorcerer. Kensai->Thieves are good too, but I am currently avoiding the Kensais because they are too easy and common already. I am more proud of my solo Cavalier than my solo Sorcerer, because it was a harder challenge trying to survive with a Cavalier than a Sorcerer.

*takes a deep breath*

Lastly, you CAN kill everything, but it will not be easy. Sometimes it is more logical to avoid a fight if it does serve your purpose best. Can my Sorcerer kill the demons in the Dead Magic rooms in Watcher's Keep? Sureeee, but what is the point? I have attained maximum level already and they have no good loot and it does not affect my main quest at all! Better to just speed through the room and get to the next level in the place.

Yggdrasil 11-29-2001 09:44 AM

I just began a game with a solo swashbuckler. My first solo; we'll see how it turns out.

I took the swashbuckler because at some point, he's going to have to go toe-to-toe with some baddies, and I think its worth giving up the backstab ability to become more proficient at fighting.

One great thing about doing the solo: you get ALL the party's xp points instead of having to share. I hate sharing.

Thrawn 11-29-2001 06:57 PM

Every single kit on Insane from SoA to ToB? Even Transmuter, Beastmaster, Plain Fighter, etc... ...?

Anyway, yes. I am playing on Insane.
