I am at beginning of stout mines and there is a big bronze beastie, who roasts us
is there any other way into the mines?
I can't get past the beastie :/

That's actually the entrance to the Dragon spire. The Stout Mines are Southwest of there. You'll need to finish up in the mines before you can get past the beast of bronze.
