how do I use the wooden stakes to attack vampires? I cannot put them in any of my weapon slots.

They are only used after you kill the vampire. When enough damage is done to a vampire it will retire to its coffin to rest. You need to use the stakes on the coffins. They are not equipped as a weapon. They may go into the quick item spotor they may be used automatically from inventory, i don't remember. However you will know when to try and use them if when you scroll over a coffin you see a sword denoting the attack cursor.

This question has already been answered numerous times (chack out the previous pages or use the 'Search' feature), but ...
When you fight against a Vampire in Bodhi's lair, and kill it, it goes back to his coffin in mist form. Then if you go and attack the coffin and have a stake in your inventory, the Vampire is now truly dead.
