I would like to know if the characters in the History Books of BG, TOTSC, BG II, IWD, etc... contain *real* D&D characters that were created from the beginnings of the pen and paper game.

I remember my brother and his friends playing and telling me I was too small to join the game... although I wasn't too young to bring them snacks and drinks and clean up after them. Anyway, they prayed for snowy days so they could have D&D marathons.

Of course I've known a few other D&D players since then, though I've never played with a group.

I just wonder if some of the legends, legendary weapons, characters, etc come from actual players.

As far as I know, the History books within the games contain information that any person that reads the Forgotten Realms Novels would appreciate. Make note that this is based on the Forgotten Realms world, and campaign, and no other. Different world campaigns will have different stories.

Volo, Elminster and Drizzt Do'Urden all come from the Forgotten Realms books. As does the Nether Scroll - Edwin's quest item.

I have heard that many of the NPCs from Baldur's Gate, and several that made their way into Shadows of Amn, were old PCs of the design team.
