I can't find the writ to get into the stout mines. It's supposed to be on the body of a Stout east of the mines but I've searched everywhere available to me and can't find it. Any ideas?

Try more to the north. The road to the mines branches southward, and before circling don around the mine, there is an area which looks like a large patch of trees surrounded by pathway. The island of trees has an inlet that contains the body you seek.
