I used to like my main character, usually a fighter/mage or plain fighter, Imoen: Natlia( don't know if the spelling is right) until I got Imoen back, Minsc, the paladin that is in the sewers, the fighter/cleric that is in the Copper Coronet, and that ranger that is having problems with the planar sphere.

but now I play online so I can make all 6 characters my own characters. now I have a 8th level thief:swashbuckler that dualed into a mage, a 7th level fighter that dualed into a cleric, an 8th level thief: assasin that dualed into a fighter, a ranger as my main character, and a paladin: cavalier. They are pretty tough cause all but the paladin and cleric use two weapon style.

If you're roleplaying your character based on his alignment/beliefs, etc., a paladin would most likely have Minsc, Mazzy, Nalia, Aerie, Keldorn, Anomen or possibly Jaheira or Cernd.

If you don't care about the roleplaying and just want the most powerful NPC's you'd probably end up with Minsc and/or Korgan, Viconia, Edwin, Jan and maybe Keldorn.

The "good" party i had looked something like this:

Me (kensi)
Minsc
Anomen
Jaheria
Aerie
Nalia.

That gave me 3 tanks (four with Jaheria if i needed) three healers, and two spellcasters. *shrugs* Seemed a pretty good combo, except for he lack of a theif... but with the lv 2 spell "knock" you really dont NEED a theif that bad.
