Do you think America will take these terrorist attacks so easily? Or do you think they plan on retaliation? I know that Europe is very angry about these hijacked planes and they're sick to death of taking the palastinians crap. What's your opinion on this?

I really, really hope they don't. The cost would be too high - WWIII. And it hasn't been proven that it was Palestinia! I think that a war over this would only make things worse for us all.

Kaz is right no-one has been found guilty so lets not jump to blaming entire nations. Also if the attacks were by a terrorist organisation, using conventional military forces against them is not very effective, look at any conflict with terrorist vs. standing armies.

NO WAR!
It'll only make things worse.
But we can't just let the terrorists get away with this.
I can't really think clearly just now...

Errr who do you declare war on?
You know what happened at Oklohoma!

Declare war on who?

Calm down, people. Hysteria is not the answer.

It may be days, weeks, months, or even years before we can determine who is responsible.

As Avatar points out, after the Oklahoma City bombing everyone was quick to assume that it was the work of international terrorists. It turned out that Americans were responsible.

It is important to not overreact out of hysteria. One of the goals of terroism is precisely to sow internal confusion and hasty mistakes as a result. Don't let them win by losing your heads.

Thanks for backing me there. I know US citizens will be pretty distressed and mad for revenge. But let's calm down. It's very likely to be a Arab attack. Due to the organizationa and scale and suicidal methods. But nothing is certain. Extreme Anarchist, Anti-capitalist and Enviromentalists are all possible candidates.

It was said on the radio in the US that if the terrorist group was backed by a nation it would problbably lead to war. But dear god let us hope that doesn't happen.

You really must be aware that this is probably not the end. For a terrorist group to do this and stop is unlikely. I'm not sure if the USA is the only target. It is probably likely, I think the United States is the most hated country in the world.

Memnoch 09-11-2001 12:36 PM

This is NOT a declaration of war. It's a cowardly act of terrorism against innocent, defenseless people.

Also, best not to lay blame on Arab/Islamic/Israeli whoever until there is confirmation. That's how hate starts.

Kaz, you dont know that war with another country will lead to WW3.
How else will America show that it will not be put under siege from another nation? Has there ever been such a direct attack on American soil? There has never been destruction on this scale and magnitude on the USA by another country!
I say go to war, mobilise the fleets and pound whichever nation or group that backed this attack into Middle Eastern dust!

I say get a grip on yourself.

Would it be too much to ask to wait until we know who is responsible before we start talking about war?

MagiK 09-11-2001 12:42 PM

There is no need for war. I am as hawkish as the next guy and I happen to have more insight into some aspects of this whole deal than most of the rest of the general population. There will be retribution, that is almost assured. But the PLO would be slitting it's own throat if they were backing this. Yasir Arafat has already denied that the PLO was involved and has expressed his condolences and his sorrow to the US.......It was one of the smartest things he could have done. No political body is going to want to be in any way associated with this. The US taking retaliatory actions won't be starting world war 3....sheesh, don't be so affraid to defend yourself. But don't go off half cocked either... know your target before you spray lead.

Everyone I talk to is convinced that war is going to break out. They are also extremely angry that anything like this can happen. This doesn't mean I agree with them, but when I think about it, people *will* be very angry once they have dealt with the initial shock. Everyone will be pointing fingers and Bush will be under pressure to retaliate on whoever's done this. Bush isn't exactly the most sane president I've seen, and so who knows what he'll do? America won't take this lightly, that's for sure, and soon people will be wanting revenge.

Absolutely, Memnoch. I have already stated this in the other thread as well. Please do NOT use rumors and speculation to form hate-based opinions on, and please, try NOT to aim them at any one group. There may well be members of IW who are of Arabic or Middle Eastern descent, or who follow the Islamic / Muslim creed, who are good people and do NOT deserve to be targeted thusly.

Please, let's keep to the facts as much as we can. I realize a lot has to be projection and supposition, but check the hate-based emotion at the door, ok? Thanks.

Yes, I agree one thousand percent. The last thing that needs to happen is for some bigoted yahoos to start taking it out on innocents.

Please, let's not start this anti bush shit now. This is not the time for it.

As far as war goes, I don't think it will come to that. The only thing that I want is for the organization (be it a terrorist group or a country) to be held accountable for their attack. And by accountable I mean I don't want them considering anything like this again in the near future.

Any of you ever read any Tom Clancy? This totally reminds me of his books. In fact in the end of Debt of Honor, the Japanese flew a 747 into the capitol building and it was completely destroyed.

I hope we don't go to war. No one knows who's responsible for the attacks. We can't go declaring war, if we're not sure who's responsible. My father is in the military, he's the only dad i've got. I don't want to lose him. Many of my friends have turned 18 and may be drafted. Besides our economy does not need a war right now. And neither do I.

Not that I want a war, but war always and I mean ALWAYS stimulates the economy. Actyally nothing can pull a country together like a war that the people believe in.

You mean, like the way it helped the economies of Germany, Japan, and Great Britain in World War II? Sorry, but that is an often repeated bit of nonsense.

However, this is not the time or place for such a discussion. I will be happy to debate the point with you at a later time.

Yes!!!! Please, remember fiascos like Vietnam. My father was in that one and it nearly destroyed him (and pulled our country apart like a couple of dogs fighting over a bone!). Fight if we MUST, not just to fight.

What is this craziness, Lifetime? I'm very surprised to hear this from you. How do you know that Middle Eastern people are even responsible? Do you know something we don't? And how does that make the US better, if they attack and destroy a nation of innocent people? Are those innocent people's lives cheaper, more expendable than American lives?

It's this kind of inflammatory statement that breeds hate and misunderstanding. Mindless violence begetting mindless violence.

Find out who was responsible and bring them to justice by all means. Retaliate against THOSE FOUND TO BE RESPONSIBLE, by all means! This type of atrocity cannot go unpunished, and will not go unpunished, regardless of who is in office.

But to go off spouting hatred and violence against a group that you don't even know is responsible is insane.

I know emotions are heated right now, but be calm for God's sake! I don't even know if some of my friends who work in WTC are still ALIVE!!! and you don't hear me baying for the blood of the most convenient target.
