I knew right away that the Caretaker was Irenicus (distinctive voice). I wanted to attack him just to see what would happen, but every time I tried to surround him the dialogue would start again. Finally Mazzy shot an arrow into his
chest but it was too late, the story started again. Has anybody tried to kill him before he offers up Imoen, and if so what happened? Also, I decided to leave Jan for Imoen but he stayed there. Will he always remain in the Asylum now?

I attacked but he refused to die and didn't turn hostile 'till it was too late.

Irenicus can't be killed in some forms ie in some parts of the game!
Just like the avatar in the lower city and many other plot essential characters like Bodhi in Chapter 3.
The strike before he turns red doesn't work on many things..such as Kangaxx and Shadow Dragon.

Jan will stay in the asylum, as there is no way for him to get out before you have found it. I think he will stay there even after you've found it since he can't move on his own...

You can not kill Irenicus at that moment. Although if you open the door hurl a cloudkill spell in (best done with a wand) and close the door you can hit him for some damage. Conversation can not start because the door is closed. Wait till he leaves again and repeat. You can not kill him as stated earlier but you can get him to a near death status this way. Helps when fighting him later on.

you can force attack him but when you've caused X amount of damage, regardless of where he is in the "tour", he will d-door out and then back in out of disguise just as he would have after the tour ("there is only sleep"). kinda speeds up the game if you dont feel like wandering among the loonies waiting for him to show up.
