I think this might be the last one. I've scanned all my remaining problems, and I feel I can do them. The problem includes:
Determine the value for c on [2,5] that satisfies the Mean Value Theorem (f'(c)= <sup>f(b)-f(a)</sup>/<sub>b-a</sub>) for f(x)=x<sup>2</sup>-3/x-1. And here's all the work I've included: f(5)= 5<sup>2</sup>-3/5-1 = <sup>25-3</sup>/<sub>4</sub> = <sup>22</sup>/<sub>4</sub>= <sup>11</sup>/<sub>2</sub> f(2)= 2<sup>2</sup>-3/2-1 = <sup>4-3</sup>/<sub>1</sub> = 1 f(x)= (x<sup>2</sup>-3)(x-1)<sup>-1</sup> f'(x)= 2x(x-1)<sup>-1</sup>-(x<sup>2</sup>-3)(x-1) = (2-2x)-(x<sup>2</sup>-3)(x-1) = -2(-1+x)-(x<sup>2</sup>-3)(x-1) = (x+1)(-2-x<sup>2</sup>+3) = (x+1)(-x<sup>2</sup>+1) (c+1)(-c<sup>2</sup>+1)= <sup>9/2</sup>/<sub>3</sub> c+1= <sup>3</sup>/<sub>2</sub> -c<sup>2</sup>+1= <sup>3</sup>/<sub>2</sub> c= <sup>1</sup>/<sub>2</sub> c= ... The answer is supposed to be 3, but I'm not getting that. Can anyone point out my error? [ 01-18-2004, 09:28 PM: Message edited by: Nanobyte ] |
I think the answer is ''green'
|
Yes, but the amount of Pokemon included in the left side of the equation doens't come close to a monkey with glasses. Sorry, but I think he'd be better off answering "chicken curry".

I think you messed up the differentiation....
it should be 2x(x-1)^-1 - (x^2-3)(x-1)^-2 (you missed off the power of -2) then carry on from there, solve by partial fractions I think. |
You have to think about the mathimatical equvelent of a squid, times by pi with a monkey milk, then divide by a squid head, the number of eyes on a blind spider and then you get...
Eggs. |
LOL! Nanobyte, I think you may go off the deep end if you include green squids and Pokemons in there! Vaskie seems to have helped out, though!

BTW Nanobyte, you aren't a mathsteacher or a lawyer,are you? |
It's AP (Advanced Placement), which is considered college level.
edited: and no, I'm neither. I actually plan on becoming a game designer, and even then, will most likely lean towards writing than programming. [ 01-19-2004, 11:16 AM: Message edited by: Nanobyte ] |
