I normally play dual class fighter mages but I fancy changing my main character to a sorcerer.

I am aware that I only get five spells a level and I can't learn new ones off scrolls so I m loking for advice as to the best spells to choose each level.

I suppose I have to bear in mind I need to be able to knock down spell defences quite early probably using secret word) and I will definitely need breach and true sight apart from that any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

If you have the time or inclination I'd be extremely happy if you could list the five spells per level you think I should use, but I'm probably pushing my luck there.

I believe I skimmed over a Sorceror FAQ covering each and every spell to pick at www.gamefaqs.com ... What I read seemed pretty well thought out.

I'm curious though: maybe I don't understand, but what makes sorcerors so much better? Just the versatility of being able to cast any one of your spells at any time? (unless you are out of a levels spells) Thats pretty good, but if you prepare your spelllist well as a specialist mage, it would seem likely you could be even more versatile, and powerful. I haven't played a sorceror, so anyone who has feel free to enlighten me if thats wrong http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

From what I've learned so far and I'm only in chapter three having done all the major quests except the unseeing eye and the Windspear Hills, it is a bonus being able to cast multiple versions of the same spell as opposed to memorising the same spell numerous times..

However:
1) you miss out on xp from learning spells-used to be a cornerstone of my strategy for getting characters up levels quickly.
2) You don't have the versatility of a pure mage for example I currently know two 5th level spells one is obviously breach and the other is true sight (I was pondering secret word) but basically I'm buggered if I fight a mage with spell protection because I can't get down his magical defences until I get another 5th level spell. So I've resorted to running around with secret word scrolls.
3) I've also had to take the decision to not learn fireball or cloud kill (lots of wands floating about) or invisibility of any sort because It does not fit in with the type of spells/tactics I'm going to be using. It gets kind of hard to get the right balance between protecting yourself from melee, magic and missile weapons and being able to knock down illusions, combat protections and spell shields on top of doing damage as a sorcerer because you don't have that many spells to choose from in the first place. If like me you like summoning foot soldiers it's even tougher.

However I know the spells I have got work well in most situations and there is less chance of me 'wasting' a spell slot with an obselete spell. but on balance I think I prefer mages rather than sorcerers. (especially when they were 15th level kensais before hand)

Sorcerer gets a bit more spell then even specialist mage and also sorcerer can cast any spell from the scroll, specialist mage can not.

Sorcerers can not dual class!

Yup and Imho some of the best mages in the game are kenshi/mage, dualed at 13 or so. now you got some serious Thac0 right there, do tensor transformation and bam u got like a 1 or 2 base thac0 and -20 adj thac0 now very hard to miss with that kind of thac0 eh http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Sorcerer was my first mage ive ever played and all i can say is theyre powerful if you prepare them right. but there always will be those odd sitution where they'll have hard time, they can use scrolls, that's true i'll probably try another sorcerer some time soon http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

here are just a few of the spells that any sorcerer I play never goes without (in no particular order)...

Magic Missile Ruby Ray of Reversal
Blur Dimension Door
Mirror Image Power Words (all except Sleep)
Acid Arrow Warding Whip
Stoneskin Horrid Wilting
Improved Invis. Incendiary Cloud
Breach
Secret Word
Fireball
Lightning Bolt
Pierce Magic
Chain Lightning
Identify
Lower Resistance

And then there's other spells like Spell Trigger and Spell Sequencer that are really necessary, but I always have a hard time wasting a sorcerer slot on. The main thing with sorcerers is that they need to have a good defensive arsenal because they'll never learn any new spells.
