Sir Moosington 08-29-2001 12:31 PM

Master of Magic was a fantasy clone of civilisation made by Microprose - crap graphics, fantastic gameplay. Had lots of extras like heroes, spellcasting, dungeons to explore etc. Unfortunately won't run on Windows 9x.

Europa Universalis was released this year by Paradox Entertainment, and is a conversion of a boardgame that covers 300 years of European history 1492 - 1792.
It features colonisation, diplomacy, infrastructure development, warfare - you name it, it's got it. It is slow to play but if you like strategy and persevere it rewards you tenfold.

I think, I have to go through the time to answer the question. The first game, I played very often was Dungeon Master (then Chaos Strikes Back) and I loved it. I think I played through it 7 or 8 times. Next was Bloodwhych, I liked the Multiplayer Style. Then came the Eye of the Beholder Trilogy. (These were my AMIGA and first PC times). After that, there were many first person shooter and now BG2 and ToB (yes, I never played BG1, I'm up to, but if you play BG2 and ToB first, it's difficult, cause the graphics, sound etc. are not as good as in BG2). My Ranking:

1. Dungeon Master/Chaos Strikes Back
2. BG2 first, then ToB
3. Eye of the Beholder Trilogy
4. DOOM
5. Counterstrike/Unreal Tournament

Out of Ranking (I think it will be a festival and I cant wait till it comes out):

Neverwinter Nights

oldbittercraig 08-29-2001 08:18 PM

1. BG Series.
2. Wizardry- Crusaders of the Dark Savant
3. Warlords 2 & 3
4. Civilization
5. Redneck Rampage, edging out doom.

debiler 08-29-2001 08:21 PM

1.BG series
2.NBA live 2000
3.Diablo II
4.Civilisation
5.The Sims

------------------
Calvin the bold http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...les/CALVIN.gif the malt beer lord is in!

Starkiller 08-29-2001 10:50 PM

Cant choose which of these is better, so the order means nothing, and I am probably forgeting a few:

1.Fallout series
2.BG series
3.FF series
4.Blade Runner(I have never since or before seen another game that did the investigation thing so well: Interogate, hunt for clues, decide who is a suspect, find them, bring them in/take them down. I dont understand why the game did so poorly, a real shame. I would LOVE to see another game like this.)
5.too many to choose from...Krondor series? X-com series? Monkey Island series?

------------------
"Not everything ends the way you think it should"

Baron Nocturna 08-30-2001 01:16 AM

1: Civilization
2: Baldurs gate Series
3: System Shock 2 (I hate shooters but LOVED this game)
4: Moebius (WAY old school)
5: Pirates!

Probably wasted more of my life on those games than i care to think of... Ugh.

Baron Nocturna

DonkeyWan 08-30-2001 08:04 AM

A'right, repect in da house, my top 5 in order of preference.

1] Civilisation
2] Master of Magic
3] Heroes of Might and magic 2
4] Indiana Jones and Fate of Atlantis
5] Starcraft

Honourable mentions, BG series, Fallout series, Diablo2, Europa Universalis, AOE2, MOO, MOO2, Darksun Wake of the Ravager, Doom, Fifa soccer series.

On the subject of MOM, I was reading about the MOO3 game here in september. Apparently, if MOO3 is successful, they'll consider releasing an updated version of MOM. Also, where are all the great games gone?

Zoltan 08-30-2001 09:49 AM

Opps how can I forget Heroes Of M&M? (necromancers are best! but forest is my favor)

Phantasy Star 4 was a game on Sega Megadrive you can play it with emulator. You can easily find it with any searh motor. The game is 4 or 5 mb but the grapchis are good or good enough to play. But the most great side of the game is interaction and romance between characters if you want to play a totaly different frp give it a try.

Also Daggerfall was unbelieveable.

Guiseppe 08-30-2001 10:00 AM

1) Baldur's Gate series
2) Planescape Torment
3) Eye of the Beholder 1 & 2 (Amiga)

btw, still got my Amiga('s) http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

HeavensFire 08-30-2001 10:17 AM

I would have to say,

1) Baldur's Gate series
2) Age of Empires series
3) Rainbow Six / Rogue Spear
4) Delta Force
5) Diablo series

Not specificlly in that order.

don_carlo_uk 08-30-2001 10:41 AM

1 = Civilisation 2. The best game i have ever played by a ridiculously high margin.
2 = Baldurs Gate 2. Best RPG i've ever played. It Inspires me.
3 = James Pond 2: Robocod. Need i even say why?
4 = Thief 2. Thief 1 was scarier and darker but 2 was slightly more polished and a better ovarall game.
5 = Tie Fighter. I played this so much i could take out a star destroyer in a tie interceptor (shieldless)

Honourable mentions go out to Master of orion 2, Magic carpet, Deus Ex, Half Life, No-one Lives Forever, Jedi Knight, Eye Of The Beholder 1+2(my first ever AD&D experience), Unreal Tournament and, although i haven't finished it yet, Giants: Ciizen Kabuto.

Avatar 08-30-2001 11:15 AM

What is Wizardry 7??? Never seen it in shops.
And what are Master of Magic and all the other cool fantasy ones?
Does Everquest count as D&D?
Are there any other recent D&D Games?

spathi 08-30-2001 01:54 PM

Here are THE best games ever:

1)Starcontrol 2 (Undisputedly, the most involving, entertaining, cool game EVER!)
2)Quake 2(Multiplayer only, because that chain gun RULED!, why didn't they keep it in QIII we'll never know.....)
3)Starcraft(NOT warcraft, which i think BLEW btw)
4)Metroid(SNES,I'd say regular nintendo, but I didn't play/have one)
5)Jedi Knight (force powers AND guns all in one. AWESOME multiplayer, sooo underated and underplayed...what a travesty! http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif ).

Honourable mentions:
6)Contra (SNES, same reason as metroid)
7)Baldurs Gate(all)
8)Civilisation II(just because it looked nicer than Civ I)
9)Wolfenstein 3D (kickin Nazi ass!, and thats where all Doom, Quake and Halflife started from)
10)Zelda(just really good. especially from SNES onwards)
11)Street Fighter II(what a game, arcade, SNES or whatever)

Discuss.

I wish commodore wouldn't have killed it.

Sir Kenyth 08-30-2001 06:13 PM

Doesn't anyone remember XCOM? It was one of the best strategy games ever! The graphics and sounds aren't too impressive now compared to more modern stuff but in its day, when average Hard drives were only a little bigger than the average RAM of todays PCs and a 486DX was high speed, it was the game to play! (Maybe I'm just old)

Ronn_Bman 08-30-2001 07:08 PM

1.) Wizardry (from late 80's on Nintendo)

Don't scream at me or send me bad emails! I was one of those guys who played paper and pencil D&D only once in a blue moon because my friends were never availible at the same time. I bought this game, sat down in front of my son's Nintendo and didn't expect much. And as far as graphics go I got very little, but afer falling back on my imagination I was riveted. I played a game without having to plan the entire adventure, without having to figure out dice rolls and without killing myself to make everyone else enjoy the game enough to play again. This game saved D&D for me!

2.) Champions of Krynn (the old SSI boxed games) for the same reasons. These games where ahead of their time. Today it's no problem to make a D&D game, but in those days...

3.) Civilization (1st)
4.) All Baldur's Gate Games
5.) Axis and Allies (I've loved this game since the beginning and always waited for the day they would computerize it....even though Hasbro did a sucky job. They patched it a couple of times and quit even though it wasn't right http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif

[This message has been edited by Ronn_Bman (edited 08-30-2001).]

Darkman 08-30-2001 08:36 PM

1) Diablo series, excluding D2 which sucked http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/puke.gif
2) Baldur's Gate series
3) Ultima series
4) Quake series
5) Age of Empires series

Nanobyte 08-30-2001 10:15 PM

Hmm.. I haven't played that many CRPG's, or RPG's for the sake of it..

1. BG series
2. Myth 2 (If you haven't played it, you're missing out, Strategy/RPG)
3. Zelda series (any of them are good, about the only worthy RPG of the NES)
4. D1, it was good at the time
5. W&W

I haven't played Ultima, but I would really like to try it. I just can't stand the $10 monthly fee..
