Have you considered simply not taking him into your party?

Are you playing the same game that I am? Minsc starts out with 2 stars each in two handed sword, long bow, mace, and dual wield. True, even though his starting level may be high enough he can't initially cast a spell but neither can Valygar - this is a known bug. When he next levels up he can.

hi can use spells

Whailor 11-26-2001 03:59 AM

You sure you play the same game as I am? Minsc in my party may not be the smartest bloke of the Sword Coast, but he's darn loyal. Just what I seek - a man who packs a punch and is loyal. Not to mention that he can cast spells, though he isn't exactly a mr. Elminster. He has in my party up to lvl 4 spells (his level is.. bleh need to check, some 18 or 19). Not to mention that he has already about 2 stars in handy proficiencies. He is however the heavy hitter in my group, using two handed swords (currently Jhoril's Dagger, confusion is neat). Gave him the belt, Girdle of Hill Giant Strength (which makes it up to 19), I simply felt like burning some cash, have all what I need and too much money left heh.. Minsc, as I said, sure packs a punch.

As for his dialogue, then while he aint speaking some fancy words because it would be 'syllably too intensive workout' for him, he's still 'cooler' to listen to then that righteous brat Anomen. Or inflated Edwin. All in all, I personally never let him go or leave him, as he is pretty good second tank (my main char is main tank). My main char can wade into the enemies and I know that behind me, Minsc is taking care of others and protecting the weaker party members. It's all about the equipment

Speaking as someone who has played the entire BG series (with the exeption of Throne of Bhall because I don't need to have high level characters to enjoy myself) I'll give a brief run down on Minsc (and a few unneccessary changes to Minsc AND Jaheira in Bg2). Minsc in BG had very high strength, offset by moderately high constitution, this resulted in many players (myself generally excluded) overestimating his abilities and biting off more than they could chew: he would take large ammounts of damage. In addition to this I observed that in BG Minsc seemed to fail more saving throws than he should have done (even with his penalties, if you turned on the dice rolls you'd notice how the computer would always roll low for his saves). I accepted this as a role playing touch to make him the big strong vulnerable fighter. In Bg he hated Gnolls, in BG2 he hated vampires for convenience! Also, in BG2 his brash, confident, loyal personality became replaced with a camp, arrogant personality ("Boo is so very little, and there is so much of Minsc to search"....."We must all get some rest less Boo bite us all in hard to reach places, trust me on this one"... and the change in pronunciation-"bart kicking for gooooodness" instead of the old cheary "but kicking for goodness"). ALso in BG2 Minsc gained an extra point of constitution (a welcome increase, I usually made him read that boo in BG as soon as I got it) but Jaheira gained two or three extra ability points spread out! This was a tad OTT (especialy since she was the most annoying and unwanted original BG NPC, maybe they should have kept Branwen (the ABBA lookalike) instead). Oh, and BTW, in BG2 Minsc can cast his meagre collection of spells.

to tell you the truth idont think minsc is that great of a ranger. he is a good tank but not great since,, like said he does miss alot of saving throws, so in retrospect the only reson im not leting him leave my party is because of his high level and his comic relif, i hink hes really funny sometimes but i do think he is sort of gay for hiding a hamster in side of his plate mail armour... i mean what is that boo doing in there?

cheesus 11-26-2001 12:40 PM

when i replay bg2 (i'm on the first run though it now) i won't bother with minsc - i like him, but he seems a bit of a waste - his skills are too spread so he's not particularly good at anything. i use him as a fighter but Mazzy now far, far outstrips him and i can only wonder how better off my team might have been with another good fighter. he's got too much experience to dump now, so it will have to wait until a repeat go begins.....
