I'm restarting BGII with a kensai and intending to dual to a mage at level 13 (equivalent to 8 proficiency slots). So far, I've used 3 for two-weapon style and 3 for long swords.

Any suggestions on how I should spend the last 2 slots (considering flail or quarterstaff, but any advice will be greatly appreciated)?

Two weapons, per Kai.
Weapon and shield.

Sorry, I didn't quite get that. Kensais aren't allowed to use shields... and I'm not sure what you meant by two weapons per kai.

Hope you can clarify on this, thanks!

5 on scimitar
3 on flail

that is my point in BGII

with expansion... I dont know

You will not be able to use your duel weapon ability if you choose the Quarter Staff. The Quarter Staff is a two handed weapon. So, I would go with the flail.

Yeah I agree quarterstaff would be a silly choice considering you have 2 weapon style already. I would vote katana for Celestial fury (also there is a nice katana for fighter mages that allows you to memorize more spells while wielded and it reduces your ac). Flail is another nice choice (depends really on the rest of your party. you may want to save flail as a choice for someone like a cleric who cannot use the edged weapons.

for what its worth I found my kensai/mage was not doing nearly as much melee towards the end of the game and into ToB as he was earlier on so you may want to consider that in your weapon choice.

Katana for Soa
Bastard Sword for ToA

Don't just think of wepons doing damage - also think about wepons giving protection (longswords have much greater variety in this area).

If you want an extra attack per round there is a scimitar that does this (and also a VERY nice scimitar in the TOB expansion - Keep portion). Very nice for dualing to a druid.

However since your going w/ a kensai mage there really is only one way to go:
dual wield katana's
celestial fury
sword of zerth (+1 bonus to AC + an additional spell for 1st through 4th level) - this is available from the bonus cd patch and is located in the game at ribalds second level from Diedre (bring lots of coin).

Single weapon fighting +++
Katana/Long Sword +++++

ScottG has it pegged, dual wield Katanas, Celestial fury, and the Zerth blade. By the time you get up there you will be a killing casting machine.

BTW, I believe that there is no benefit with waiting to lvl 13, dualing at lvl 12 gets you the same amount of prof points. It also is going to seem like forever, getting your Kensai abilities back. I have a kensai/mage that I dualed at lvl 9, and he is unstoppable.
