To continue a discussion from another thread, just what impression is the United States making on the world right now?

Kaz 09-04-2001 03:39 PM

I am not sure if I am speaking for all of Europe (or all of Germany even) but this is the impression we are getting here: America is trying to operate on a loner policy and is pretty much ignoring Europe. It is a bit annoying to have America quit the ABM treaty or the Kyoto Conference when things like global warming affect us all. If something is not done about the pollution levels, we will all suffer. And the US IS the largest producer (wrong word I take it) of pollution and toxins worldwide if I remember correctly. Just my 2 Pfennig.

Im fairly confident American leadership is seen as arrogant and inflexible, at the least. Our so-called leader has thumbed his nose at many world agreements, that matter to the rest of the world and to people here as well. Ranging from the Kyoto treaty, banning landmines, and the ABM treaty. Corporations influence the current American govt to the point of control and they care about profit more than the enviroment. Alls I can say to the rest of the world is wait, in four years it'll all change. I just hope that during this time the Bush doesn't rekindle the military industrial complex that fueled the cold war, for he sure is pushing Russia's buttons with the whole ABM and missle defense thing.

Kaz 09-04-2001 03:52 PM

I read an article in the Spiegel (German equivalent of Time) today that said the US had been sending up spy satellites that were not registered with the UNO in opposition to regulations. This, combined with the ABM treaty and the missile defence thing, is the best way back to the cold war that I can think of, and Europe is between Russia and America (not that it would help if we were in the Antarctic, we'd still be pulled into the conflict). These are the times where I say: I want OFF this planet, I want to get AWAY from here!!!!

Well i would say
Inflexible, Conservitive, closed
The Democrats are the most socialist party the US has and they are about as Socialist as our most right-winged Big Party
Also the way election goes in the US is outdated and from a period where the rioch felt that they should have the right to overrule the peoples vote

About Bush I'm even more negative
First of all there was the accident with the Chinese Airplain which he did not want to apologise for
Second the breakin of the Kyoto treaty which is terrible
Third the Anti-Missle defence

I'm to say it mildly
Not possitive about US politics

The US is seen as reasonably selfish to outsiders. For example, the US seems to assume they are the only ones in the world, rarely or never giving news or information about other nations or continents. That's why I find many Americans very ignorant about what's going on in other parts of the world. I find them badly informed - not by any fault of the people themselves but by the nation as a whole. But the US is a great country, Americans should be be very proud of it. I went there a while back and had a brilliant time, its one of my favourite places to visit.

I read somewhere that in a survey, 40% of high school absolvents in America couldn't name a single country in Asia.
I consider this to be impossible, the survey must have been manipulated. I mean... 40%? Good grief! What about China and Russia??

Certainly here in the UK, there is a lot of ill feeling towards Bush. (Not to mention those radical right wingers who do the thinking/governing for him...) It is puzzling how a leader who doesn’t even have the people’s vote, strictly speaking, can feel himself so confident in breaking with the rest of the world when it comes to global agreements designed to protect and safeguard us.

On the other hand, Dubya’s presence in the White House does have its up side. He’s done more to bring people together in support of environmental and social issues than anyone else I can think of – not to mention nations!

I think we’re all dead pleased that he’s taken so much holiday since he was elected (I use that word in the loosest possible sense.....) ....

If he was one of these 20 hour a day, 7 days a week workaholic wizz kids that you seem to breed so many of in the US, what price mother Earth and all who sail in her? Oops.......

On the environment front, there’s lots to say, of course......... Kind of inflamatory, maybe I’ll stick to criticising Bush..... At least for the time being http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif
