Could anyone tell me what these bits and bobs are for (portal gem/chapel key)?
And what's up with the search engine, it hardly ever comes
up with the goods anymore?

Chapel Key is used in Windspear hills dungeon,Portal Keys To escape from jon irenicus's dungeon.

well I've killed the dragon a while ago and turned dungeon upside down
have I used key and forgotten? Or is it to somthing obvious?

I believe you get the key in Windspear hills. You use it in the sewers. North side secret door. Unless I'm thinking of a different key.

Do you have the portal key or portal gem? They are different. The gem is used with Haer' Dalis' quest.

Regarding Windspear Hills,

Sewer Key: Keep, use it in the Temple Sewers.

Chapel Key: Throw away, throw away.

Regarding Portal items,

Portal Key: You can't have the Portal Key outside Jon Irenicus's dungeon, it disappears when you exit it.

Portal Gem: Give it back to Haer'Dalis's boss in the basement of the Five Flagon Inn in the Bridge District.
