This is probably a dumb question but is there any need for an evil character to wear anything that gives 'Protection vs Evil'?

Depends on if he needs protection from himself or if he is fighting other evil characters.

Evil chars always need to be protected from themselves...However, you are not the only force for evil in the realms, and their goals may not match/suit your own goals for realm domination. It is wise to be prepared, in any way possible, for imminent confrontations.

Sure. Plenty of opponents are evil, and protection can be handy. Especially if you come up against something with mind-affecting spells. Just because you're evil doesn't mean other evil characters will like you ;)

Protection from evil is necessary if you are a wizard or sorceror using the 9th level Gate spell. That is the one that summons a Balor to battle. Without protection from evil, it will attack you rather than any enemies you are facing. If protected from evil, the Balor will be your servent for the duration of the spell.
