I created a charater to hold stuff until I could identify them or use them. I gave him 4 ahnks and other stuff. I checked-he had them. Then shut off game.
Next day[today] the ahnks were gone but most other stuff was there.

Ouches!! That hurts!

Ahnks seem best used when you find them. Not sure if it makes any difference if you get them identified first or not. Hope you don't loose any other good stuff! I have a character staying in the inn holding musical instruments in case I should ever decide to become a bard.
