HAS anyone killed a lich or a really high level mage purely through spells?

I wacked the Thaxxxlliyx....or whtever the name is pruely by beating it with six or seven killer clouds :o)

Actually, my main way to fight dragons is distracting him with my fighters while my mages cast lightning at him. If the dragon is particularly pissed I might soften him up by getting all of his killer spells out on some summoned monsters. I might even use Otiluke's Resilience Sphere on one of my guys to ensure he doesn't get iced but is the dragon's main target. Spells can make a difference in any fight...

not dragons...they are easy to kill..just gotta be quick!

Spells are great but seeing your enemy disappear in a cloud of smoke is not as much fun as feeling his hot blood spray over you as you slowly hack him into pieces while screaming insanely and watch the life snuffed out from his eyes.....

I should probably take my medication now!

I killed Kangaxx with my multiclassed Cleric/Mage. I used two spells. Spell Immunity - Abjuration and Melf's Minute Meteors. I then finished him off with Ring of the Ram.

I kill all high level mages with only spells, but liches have enough HP that I'll used ranged attack fighters.

I've killed firkraag with my solo Conjuror. Just had lower resistence in sequencer. Then spell trigger of Vampiric touches whihc does about 90-10 damage. then an abi-dalzeems.

I live for spells and you can anything in the game out with spells alone ask Jonny boy after he met my sorcerer Edwin Aerie and Imoen, bet he regreted the day he lay his eyes on me sigh but he had such soft puppy dog eyes (I tell a lie)
