Yeah, that goes back to what I've said a couple of times here, at least. Stuff needed for persistent worlds in NWN's was done by the community. Bioware had no idea that they could be done.

OMG. Troika sucks ass. Their Art direction especially sucks. :( BAD news....

robertthebard 07-13-2006 09:22 AM

It's balanced out by the Black Isle people though. Hopefully they got the best of both worlds there. Actually, the art hasn't been that bad, from what we've been shown. Unfortunately, art doesn't make a game.

An "easy" idea for Dragon Age (the developers) and NeverWinter Nights 2 (once again, the developers):

-- take a look at the NWN coding.
-- see what people did to create the code to piece together the twenty most successful Persistent Worlds. (after all, technically all that coding is open source to a degree and able to be looked at and used by Bioware the moment you use it for a Bioware game if I remember correctly)
-- see where the similarities are.
-- take a look at the new coding for your projects (those being Dragon Age and NeverWinter Nights 2)
-- see where the same kinds of things can be implemented
-- take a SECOND look at those possible implementations and see where the bugs are GOING to show
-- try to do the implementations and note down all the obvious and not-so-obvious breaks in the coding
-- post it up on forums so that the people can see how difficult it would be for you to implement given your current time constrictions
-- watch as the gaming community who refuses to give up on the possibility of supermultiplayer games within your projects starts proving you wrong and provides numerous possible solutions
-- repeat until it works or until "closing time", always making sure to post up the latest results

in essence, make the people who want it most do the work for you. after all, if it was possible before, it technically should be possible again. however, if there's not enough time in the day for you to do it, make it possible for others to. because when it comes down to it, that's what happened the first time around.

The problem with that system is pretty self evident. Which coders are you going to pull off the actual game coding to research/write the needed codes? Is it possible to code PW's into the NWN 2 system, yes. Is it going to be cost effective in the long haul? No. That kind of thing isn't really relevent to the game. The stuff that really should be, and is being drastically under emphasized, such as the DM Client, are where they needed to place priorities. All in all, if they resolve the walkmesh issues, and reduce the actual content the players would have to download to play, and make it work within the game, as with the updater in NWN's, then it won't be a game breaking issue. If they just blow that kind of stuff off, it can be.

Brian Lawson will leave OE after completion of NWN2... Another BIG RED FLAG...

I am also a PW-style mod builder/scripter and I have to admit to being rather discouraged by the whole area/mod size issue and the lack of DM Client. Our server might just stick to NWN1 where we were planning to go to NWN2 as soon as possible.

NWN2 *should* be as good, if not better than NWN1. All the hype and hope that has been bandied about concerning NWN2 over the last few years has lead us to believe that it would be just that. Unfortunately NWN2's developement has been given to a group of people who don't seem to believe in the multiplayer aspect of the game. I'm not talking about not having time and resources (which it has to be agreed are not limitless and may curtail some things that the developers may want to do), but actually having the right mindset. All I see is SP SP SP SP. Neverwinter was and is much much more than a SP game.

Micah: you have to remember that we have been awaiting NWN2 for a long while with the hopes (and expectation) that the PW and mult-server PW issues were going to be addressed. What seems to be happening is that not only will these issues not be addressed, but we are having PW taken away almost completely (it seems). This is a horrible blow to the PW community and bound to get us worked up.

Honestly, the level of speculation in this thread alone would make me burn out if I attempted it.

Seriously. Here's a good idea. Give it a few months. Stop all the speculating, and wait.

Buy the game if you're going to, or not. If you do, then if you don't like it you can always trade it back in at a local game store anyways, not like it will be a giant waste of money that sits on your shelf.

But seriously, the level of speculation on this thread is disturbing, and this thread seems to have gone nowhere but a massive FLAME OE! schtick that is getting old. FFS this sounds like the OMG PS3 SUXXOR! threads in another forum I'm on.

robertthebard 07-21-2006 04:19 AM

Actually a lot of what's posted here is based on facts. Things that have been gleaned from the NWN's 2 Forums at Bioware. Perhaps some of the issues will now be better dealt with since they bumped the release date. However, not everyone that might want to buy the game for online play may be skimming the threads at Bioware, so it's kinda nice to have the info available in more than one place, especially since OE isn't very forthcoming with information.

Ziroc 07-22-2006 02:33 AM

And notice nearly EVERY single time 'new' screenshots are released from other sites, OE always--ALWAYS-- says "Those screenshots are a year old"...

Ok, so release new ones? Um.. yeh. It's like, if you are making a PC game, and its close to release, don't you think you would see NEW screenshots by now? Not if the game sucks ass.
