Personally... I never start Chapter 4 until I have reached Level 15+.

I usually try to get a majority of the side quests done before going after Imoen...the thing is, there a few side quests that are extremely difficult to complete if you haven't gained a certain level of power. the best example of this would be the Twisted Rune. However, as far as the regular side quests go, it i's a good idea to take care of these before sailing out to Spellhold. This gives you a good chance to finish up sub-quests for the NPCs in your party as well, and build up a badass party for Spellhold/Underwater City/the Underdark (since this is a huge chunk of XP and what not, I am very selective about who is in my party at this point in the game.)

Well I did save the twisted rune quest and
the guarded compound in the temple district
for after the underdark.

Hmm. I found the guarded compound overrated in difficulty. I destroyed the lot of them, with no party deaths, at about level 11-12. Its real nice to have the Celestial Fury at that level. My fighter/thief dual-class wields the CF and does just monstrous damage with it.

Guarded Compound can be a breeze if you do the right things.

At the first floor, trigger the summon trap and run away out of sight. Let the two groups of monsters duke it out with each other. Clean up the leftovers.

Turn off AI, go to the second floor. Immediately start detecting traps, cast Greater Malison followed by Emotion on the enemy group.

Most of them will collapse from Emotion, get your Thief to disarm the traps and whack them for free.

If not a Sorcerer casting total oblivion, then a Paladin meting out justice. Otherwise, I think I will just be a bard and torture my enemies with, "My Heart Will Go On".

If you plan to have Imoen in your party, be sure to leave some quests for later when can get back to the mainland.

One of the problems I faced was that by doing most of the quests, I was pretty high level by the time I went to Brynnlaw. After rescuing her she was waaaay behind the rest of the party, in terms of exp and levels.
