I don't seem to be able to turn the first page (fireball,) any clues?

Have you used it yet??? You have to use the fireball spell (it goes in the quickslot) and then you get the next spell...

Right click on it in your quickslot and choose the turn page option, then left click it.

Well I gave it to Yoshimo and after entering the Asylum Yoshimo is gone along with the book. I was given his inventory but not what was equiped on him unfortunately.
