Actually I think you can kill what you like. I did and it didn't cause me any problems with the promotion. Also, note that when you go back to a guild without finishing a quest they will often remind you of what you need to do, so missing the information first time around is usually OK.

You have to open the drawbridge on S. Castle. Don't kill anything on your way to doing so, just get the drawbridge open and split out of there.
