This is to combat all those people out there who have started to come out as Aerie fans. We ask the simple question:

WHY??????

Which I think is fair enough myself. My hatred of Aerie as a character comes from three simple points:

1. Edwin, Nalia, Jan, and Imoen are all better mages.
2. Anomen, Viconia, Jaheira, and Cernd are all better priests.
and
3. EVERYONE is a better fighter (even Jan will last longer in a fight than Aerie).

Pretty good reasons for not wanting her in your party in my veiw. Feel free to add to this list, but please keep it clean guys.

I hope this mis-guided creature soon realizes his mistake and crawls up to Aerie on his bare knees, and begs for forgiveness!

I saw the movie, but I didn't think the action scenes were THAT good.

I just beat the game with Aerie in my party for first time, in her last statement to Irenicus before we kill him she sounded more like what Viconia would sound like when angered rather than her whiny, kind-hearted, usual self...maybe she has some potential after all... haha no JK there could never be any potential for such a whiny, pathetic creature

Barry the Sprout 10-29-2001 07:42 AM

Never gonna happen ReGin. She would probably get scared and run away. But seriously, why do you guys like her quite so much. As far as I can tell she has absolutely nothing going for her unless you tool her up. Most of the other characters are good without all the special equipment.

Not quite true. I think what most people like about her is her versatility - she can cast both Cleric and Mage Spells (especially handy when using Contingencies or Chain Contingencies), and she can be a decent enough character. In one of my current games, I haven't yet picked up Imoen, so I have given Aerie the Robe of Vecna. She is also wearing the Ioun Stone that gives bonus to AC, the Fortress Shield (she has enough strength because she has the Mauler's Arm Mace equipped), Bracers of Defense AC 3, Amulet of Power, and some more decent stuff and I now have her AC down to -5 and her spellcasting speed is incredible. If you are playing a good party, you cannot take Viconia as a cleric, so if you don't want Anomen for some reason (http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif), Aerie is the only option left.

But anyway, this has all been said time and time again, and I really do think you are just posting all this for the purpose of having a nice argument rather than because you actually care. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

I'm new here Melusine - sorry if this has been said before. I actually quite like Anomen as he rocks in combat as well as having more spells than his wisdom should really allow (what is with that by the way?). Okay so you can combine two people in one character but only at the expense of the finer points of both. Edwin is the god as far as mage spells are concerned although I can understand why people don't like him in their party. But even Jan is a better mage than Aerie in my opinion as he gets all that damage resistance from his rather cool armour.
In general I just don't like the idea of having a character purely because they are good when tooled up. Call me a purist but some of the joy fo the game is the fact that the characters themselves are quite good. Here endeth the 3rd rant according to Barry.

OK, I can see where you're coming from, but no one's going to play the game without "tooling up" their characters, right? http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif I mean, I haven't given Aerie all my best equipment just to get her to a decent level, I always even it out, and try to give each the equipment that fits them best.
I actually don't find Anomen as horrible as I expected - I do agree the soundset is extremely annoying, but purely charactre-wise he is decent enough. I checked the percentage of kills he had in the party, and he was second best after Minsc and my own Cleric of Lathander. About the low wisdom that he has:

Aerie is VERY good.
Not only for the reason that she can cast both cleric and mage spells, she is also so cuddly and cute!http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...ittleangel.gif
I must say I love her...and have proven it several times in the game...http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

Ares 10-29-2001 09:47 AM

She may be a whore but she is a nice-cute whore http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif
I personally like her because she almost never runs out of spells if you give her items that let her have more spells for 1-7 lvl http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

I shall start off by saying point 3 is a moot point, Aerie is not meant to be a fighter, and that is it. Sureeee, you can tool her to be one, you can also make Minsc to be a Cleric. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...les/tongue.gif

Aerie in my opinion, is a better Mage than Jan. Although Jan has more Mage spell slots, he cannot cast Necromantic spells.

The nice thing about Aerie is that she has the best of both worlds, she may not be able to cast level 8 Mage spells in SoA, but she still has powerful spells from her Cleric side.

It is always fun to combine Priest and Mage spells in sequencers and contingencies.

Lastly, if you can handle the loss of high-level Turn Undead, Aerie is all the Cleric you need, with Mage spells to boot.

Aerie is not meant to be the main mage, she excels as a secondary mage, while she prepares the enemy with Breaches, and such, the main Mage can unleash Hell on the enemy.

In the end however, I could rant on and on until I froth at the mouth and die from a heart attack, but the final decision is still up to you. If you still feel she is too 'frail' for your party, then so be it, it is after all, your party, but know that many people have successfully played with Aerie without her even dying once, including me. It is amazing what Stoneskins can do for any Mage.

A Paladin duty:

1.- Protected to innocent.
2.- Have to who defender.
3.- Dedicate his life to his protection.
4.- Is resposible of his acts because his decision will have consecuences.
5.- Forever: Honor, Corage, Valor, Best equipament, the God´s force, kindness.

Why Aerie?

What party have you?

Have you fear?

Why Aerie?

Aerie has a pure heart.
Is weak, yes, but that adventure should be without her.
Is weak, yes, fear you can´t protect her.
Is weak, yes, but how many times to salve to you or to a member party.
Is weak, yes, but how will be most strenght if no gain experence.
Is weak, yes, but is because you known´t use her adequatly.
Is weak, yes, but her has equipeted adequatly.
Is weak, yes, but without she my Paladin don´t be so strenght so today.

You has play BG II, terminated with she so with life, I not think.

Sorry if I was drastic!

The Hunter of Jahanna 10-31-2001 01:09 AM

I HATE Aerie because she smells like carrion from her rotting dead cut off wings !!!

I HATE aerie because she CONSTANTLY whines about not having the afore mentioned wings attached to her scrawny carcass any more.

I HATE aerie because she is just what BG2 didnt need , ANOTHER multi classed mage!!

My final reason for hateing aerie is that when I have Korgan , Edwin , and Viconia in my party Aerie whines and cries and ruins all of the fun !!.................at least untill Korgan kills her http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

chinese noodle 10-31-2001 02:11 AM

ok, somone said there were better mages and better priests, but are there better mage/priests, NO to have the better mages and priests it takes up TWO character slots in your party, and they also said that Everyone is a better fighter, ive said this before and ill say it again ONLY BECAUSE YOU DONT LIKE HER!!! because you dont like her you wont pay as much attention to her items or health, i like her and in my party she has a -6 AC, and is my ,major spellcaster (except for edwin of course) and when she runs out of spells she can run in with crom faeyer and her fortress shield and mop up any left over bad dudes.

AERIE RULES!!!

tehmpus 10-31-2001 02:31 AM

Aerie is a very cute, and useful party member.

So Sayeth the God of War.

I have said this before and I will say it again. What is the point of having Aerie and giving her all these cool items to make her acceptably good. Why not just have someone who is good in the first place and give them the items to make them awesome? Surely the logic of that isn't too hard to follow, even for Aerie lovers.
As for her being able to do the work of two people it has to be admitted that you need other people to back her up on all of her primary functions. She can't turn undead (possibly the most useful clerical aspect in my view), she is not a primary spell caster, and she is only good in combat at taking out the leftovers.

And I forget who said it but they are right - BG2 did not need another multi class mage. Three theif/mages... why...

tehmpus 10-31-2001 06:11 AM

I hate to be snide, but Aerie CAN turn undead.

But why on Earth would you want to scare them away when you could mass slaughter them instead. Aerie has yee ol Sunray spell in my game. Couple her spell with a couple Sunray casting items that can be found, and pretty much any undead minion... or group thereof... will lay down and die in a fabulous display of disintegrating flesh.

That is the kind of wanted destruction that pleases the God of War.

But sure, Aerie could merely scare em away if she wanted to with Turn Undead.

Barry the Sprout 10-31-2001 07:13 AM

Sorry - I'm being stupid.

I always find that high level Turn Undead just makes the undead in question explode. I still seem to get xp's for it. Although the wanton destructin sounds fun you can do that with any cleric.

In terms of high amusment factor what I found recently that seemed to be quite good was a bard with:
Amulet of Power,
Ring of Gaxx,
Crom Faeyr,
and the Equaliser,
casting Tensers Transformation on himself and using Improved Haste from the ring of Gaxx to take on the whole of Bodhi's lair in chapter 6. That was interesting, bits of Vampire being scraped off the roof for weeks to come I would have thought...
