I just finished the prison puzzle and got the second monkey idol. Then I did pushed a button which lowered an elevator which took me up into a small room with about three vipers and a treasure chest. I can't get back down, the elevator will not lower. Can't find any switches either.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a "bug"...elevators have a nasty habit of getting stuck in this game.

Can you reload from a previous save?

Yes, but will likely lose an hour or more of gaming. Need to have multiple saves and more often I guess.

Yes, save OFTEN!! Save in different slots. I generally keep at least 4 saves going when I play a game. One just outside of town before I enter. If I like everything I did in town, I will resave to that file when I come out. One for outside a dungeon. One or two inside a dungeon depending on its complexity. Helps a lot when some section of the game needs to be replayed.

Don, there is no cure for the problem you have - it's reload last save time. The elevators in serpent temple, and the the one in D'Soto's tower are notoriously buggy. They seem to get frozen by random monster encounters. Save before going into one. In the tower, I had to turn encounters to seldom to be able to get up, get what I needed, and get out before the lift froze (jumping out the window is useless as I realised later as you can't get back in then). That may help if you are having repeated trouble.
