Recommendation Request: Starter Scary/Horror Movie

My two teenager girls have never been allowed to watch a scary/horror movie, but my oldest turns 18 Tuesday and my wife will be out of town and the kids are begging to see a real scary movie. But...there's too many to choose from! What do you do? A classic? Something new? I say there is a difference in scary (ghost) vs. horror (gory) movies...and there are so many branches to go from there...monster, psychopathic killers, undead, supernatural, alien...
What would you show your kids as their FIRST scary movie?
I want it to count...I want it to knock them down and make them sorry they ever asked...I don't want them to roll their eyes and say the hype was unfounded.

Note: my wife finds the Ghost and Mr. Chicken too scary for her liking...
