heya all!

im kinda stumped here but here is the thing..

first off.. i got some files off the internet (which is very hard to seperate manually). now is there any way to compress 900+mb worth of files to 120 mb in Each compression? meaning there will be 9 sets of files out of that 900mb in total each with 120mb capacity and doing so right away since i only have one 128 usb memory stick with me and i need to transfer files to another computer.

hope you understand me.. its kinda difficult to explain actually.

oh yeah linking to two computers is pretty hard since they are really very far apart like 50 meters away .

i tried using winzip but i cant seem to find the function that allows you to predetermine the compression capacity and making a new file. anyone know of another program that can do it?

Sounds like what you need is a file splitter/rejoiner rather than a compressor. Try doing an internet search for HJSplit and see if that might work.

MasterSplitter does exactly what you are looking for, and it's got a 5 star review from ZDnet. Leech here: (It's free)

I've used it in the past, and works great! (Had an old 120MB Zipdrive) And had 4 gigs of stuff.

pfff mastersplitter  :D

get winrar. rar's are better compression, and you can split the file as your rar'ing it :D

(edit: yay i found the j/k smilie in the graphics library)

So this would allow me to split a 1gb file on my hard drive so that I could then burn it to fit on 2 cd's (700mb and 300mb)? I ask because when I tried using Winrar it did not work the way I planned :/.

should do, although i'm not shure how exactly these programs work, as in if they can split the file in it's crrent format or whether it would have to be zipped first.

You can also use winzip. The newest version of winzip (or at least 8.1) has the option to split archives (under actions -> split). You can manually set the files size to use or take the standard sizes like 1.44mb (floppy ) 100 mb, 250 mb etc.

The only problem I encountered was incompatibility with older winzip versions.

that is a big thing deejax if you cant use the older versions of winzip.

but it worked.. using file splitter and winrar compression. cant believe from 800mb to 400mb :D thats cool!.

Cool! yeah, I rarely use Mastersplitter, but for splitting files, it's easier. I mainly use RAR, ZIP (since Pkunzip 1.0 for DOS!) and rarely ACE.

Anyone remember ARJ? I never use that anymore...

PS: Tip of the day for compressing files: If you are compressing EXE's or PAK files, those won't compress much, BUT, compressing text will take it down sometimes 90% of the original size! cool eh?
