When u do that quest with the killings in Umar hills, there is a statue in the temple ruin dungeon which seems to be waiting for me to put something into its hands. Is that just a wild goose chase or am I supposed to give it something?

Yes, it's likely that you will use that statue, in Chapter 6. Unless you really want me to, however, I won't spoil you as to specifically what you'll use it for, because it would ruin a part of the storyline.
