I felt like stopping to play BG2 ´round 2 weeks ago because I got killed by a mind flayer group, and had to reload.. It wants to say that I've somehow lost my patience.. So I´m asking a good way to kill mind flayers, or rather have some protection from them because they take melee damage easily. This is in the southern caves of the underdark. Party: WS/Minsc/Valygar/Aerie/Nalia/Imoen

If you have access to them the two summons Mordenkainen's Sword and Skeleton Warrior are immune to their psionics and intelligence drain.

Potions of Genius can suddenly be utilised as healing potions.

the battle in underdark, no? whats good is to figure out where they spawn, and put skely warriors, fire elementals, or mordakenian's swords there, and have your party members right behind them. that way, the mind flayers will focus on your summons. Dont worry about positioning summons by the umber hulks, phaere will take out those pretty fast, and sola will get the other set. bless, chant, haste, and protection from evil your party before, and maybe have a cleric turn undead. i dont know if they count as undead, but it seemed to work when my cleric used it.

I've found that Skeleton Warriors actually are susceptible to INT drains, unfortunately, at least in my game. He's not talking about the Solaufein/Phaere encounter, he specifically said "the southern tunnels of the underdark."

Tip #1: Stealth/Invisibility. Oddly enough, this works great, even though Illithids are supposed to be able to detect the thoughts of any intelligent creature, so sneaking up on them should be impossible. But, you can still use a Thief or somebody to scout to your heart's content, in complete safety. (Note: If you've installed the Improved Mind Flayers MOD, everything I just said is no longer true.)

Tip #2: Death Spell is quite handy for taking out large groups of Umber Hulks, and it doesn't wake the Mind Flayers up, either.

Tip #3: Keep your vulnerable characters well away from the battle. If a character gets Stunned, any Mind Flayer who can see him/her will make a beeline toward his next free meal. Ouch. Avoid this situation by using only your best fighters: A Tank with good Saving Throws and a reasonably high INT (such as Keldorn) can spank those Mind Flayers like a red-headed stepchild, all by himself.

Tip #4: The city has doors--USE THEM!!! Do your fighting in the hallways, to minimize the Flayers' chances of scoring Critical Hits. Retreat if you go below 5 INT (or under 10, if you want to play it safe).

Protection from magical weapons makes you immune to them
simply have your mage cast that; run up to them & get their attention, and then have the rest of your group use a ranged attack to kill them off. Most likely the mage will be stunned so you only have untill the protection wears off to kill them all (or your mage is dead meat).

Another way is to use a potion you get from an illithid lair; it will make you immune to psionics for a short time during which you can "kite" the illithid with a ranged attack.

Then theres always the cheese tactic of setting a mess of traps...
