Old game new computer.

I'm having problems with the game dropping back to the desktop.
I have the patches 1.03, 1.04, 1.05 and 1.05b.
I've reloaded the game and repatched several times.
My wife can run the game with same patch files no problem (except for
minor freezing).
I meet the minimum requirements and then some.
P4 3.06 Hyper threaded
1024 MB Ram
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
Win XP Pro

Anyone else had this problem?

Thanks

Welcome to Ironworksforum, kcolop.

Unfortunately I don't know the answer to your question, but questions regarding games should be post in the Miscellaneous Games forum or in it's own forum if it has one.

Generally speaking, older games don't run very well on WinXP, and Some won't run at all.

From your post, I suppose your wife is running the game from her PC. What OS is her PC running on?

Or it could be your video card. Darkstone is very picky when comes to video cards. Back then, I was playing with my old Vodoo1 (4 MB RAM) and a lot of textures didn't show up at all. On the other hand, Most of the playes running on nVidia TNT (16 MB RAM) have not encounter any problem at all.

Sorry to post in the wrong thread. I didn't notice the misc thread just noticed that the Darkstione one had been retired.

I'll move this thread to there.

It's probably because of XP, i have several games that won't run anymore since i have XP. I haven't tried Darkstone yet though, i'll give it a try tonight.

Doesn't seem to be anyone looking at the Misc. thread?

I'm running it in Program Compatibility Mode. I've tried both 98 and 95 but it doesn't seem to help. I've had very good luck with my daughters games in doing that. Most kids games are older (at least hers are) and not listing even 98 sometimes as a requirement.

I've seen a post about my video card and turning off some of the advanced features. I tried doing that but I'm not sure if I really turned off the right things. (anti stuff) It didn't really have a turn this off button. They are set to let the running program decide and when you try to go from that you have to choose a level to set them at and off isn't an option.

I am too lazy to post twice. Besides, you could request the mods to move the thread there.

The compatiblity mode might work on some of the games but Darkstone relies heavily on DirectX API, some of which might not interpret well on WinXP. DirectX are supposed to be backward compatibility but Darkstone was written to run on very early versions of DirectX.

Anyway, I am not a programmer and I know nuts about API and stuff. It might be better for another member to volunteer to test it out on his/her WinXP.
