How do Thief traps work(ie, what sets them off) and is there a danger to setting them?

Once traps are set, monsters (red circles) coming near them will be pelted with all sorts of damage depending on the level of the trap.

As far as I know, there is no danger to having thief traps except maybe if you place too many and the game crashes.

Hope this helps.

Does set traps give you any added security when resting?

I find a room with one door and set a trap in the doorway and then rest.

Is that a waste of time?

Not a waste of time, but it depends where the game spawns the creature at, those traps are proximity traps. When the monster get a certain distance from the traps it will go off.
