It seems like I can have only one portal setup at a time for the entire party. Or can I have a portal for each castor?

I have a Alchemist (named Anthrax) and a Psionic (named Wookie) who can cast both portal spells. Anthrax cast Set Portal in Trynton. Wookie cast Set Portal in Arnika. Anthrax casts Return to Portal. I'm still in Arnika. D@mm*t! I wanted to be in Trynton.

Other threads in here seemed to suggest that you could portal to town, get juice and port back. How?

You can have one portal set for each castor who knows the spell. You need at least 59 points in any school (not realm) before your castor can know the spell and unless you take the spell during a level-up (when you can automatically learn both using one spell pick), you will actually need both the Book of Portals and the Book of Return in order for this spell to be of use to you.

I was carrying around two of each for a long time while I tried to build my Valkyrie and Ranger up to 60 to be able to use the books. At 58 points in Divinity/Alchemy, I couldn't learn them. At 59, I could.

I think you're probably doing it right but you're probably doing it wrong :D . You understand it perfectly - each caster can have his/her own portal with Set and Return. You may have just forgotten which one cast which portal where.

hmm, I read a table somewhere which said how the skill level impacted learning spells.

I don't remember all the numbers for each spell level but how it worked was this:

To learn a spell of level X you needed a total of Y in (your school's skill + 10% of the relevant realm's skill).

It seemed to work that way for all my spells BUT the Set/Return to Portal spell, which was really annoying. From 50 on I kept trying the books after every battle where they'd raised their Alchemy/Divinity stat and even at 58 I couldn't get them to learn it and that was with around 70 pts in Divine/50 pts in Water for my Valkyrie and around 60 pts in Air/50 pts in Earth/70 pts in Water for my Ranger. Yet they could both learn it once they hit 59, mostly because learning it raised each skill to 60 just by learning the spells!?! Weirdness!

As I recall it, aside from the skill requirement, there is also a Level requirement, i.e., for every spell, your character needs to be at least a certain level as a mage, or alchem., or bishop, etc.

Are you sure the Return to Portal spell didn't fizzle when you cast it?

Doh, I tried it again last night and it worked like it should. I don't know what I screwed up the first time. Thanks!
